SoCal High School & Prep
Report
LA Times'
"Frantic Friday".
We Call it "Insane Saturday"--(December 29,
1997)
And "Manic Monday" , as well as "Torturous Tuesday". This last Friday's edition of the LA Times reminded us upon our return from Cabo that there were more tourney going on this last weekend and through this week than are really humanly possible to keep up with. Most of these extend over into today and tomorrow, Monday the 29th and Tuesday the 30th of December. To our knowledge though, the San Diego Nike Tourney is the only SoCal Tourney which will feature play on New Year's Eve.
In case you're inclined to stay in SoCal, and avoid the ski slopes or the beaches, there are more than a few worth watching. We've written some more detailed reports on some, and include some brief results from around the region on others. We may not be able to cover it all in excrutiating detail, but at least you'll get the flavor of some of the games.
1. Hart High School Tournament: This one is, obviously, played at William S. Hart High in Santa Clarita. The top teams in this tourney are Simi Valley, Cleveland, San Fernando and Valencia. Check the article for details of some first and second round play.
2. Best in the West: We've already put up the preliminary schedules and some scattered game results and a few reports from Jason Day. Be there for this one.
3. La Salle/Temple City Tourney: This one goes on through tomorrow, Tuesday, December 30th, at La Salle. We've got a listing for the tourney, with some preliminary schedules in at least one Daily Article. Use the search engine to locate it if you must. In the meantime, here are some reports on Harvard-Westlake's loss to Marshall, and Montclair's win over Reseda.
4. Santa Paula Tournament: This one is played at Santa Paula High, and is only a three day affair, with the finals today, Monday, December 29, 1997. The top teams competing have been Oak Park, Hueneme and Santa Paula, with its great guard Joe Riccio, a transfer from Thousand Oaks. 15. Check our article for first round results and notes.
5. Birmingham Tournament: The play at Birmingham's Van Nuys campus located on Victory and Balboa began Saturday, and continues today and tomorrow. We don't have any results yet, but we're sure to be getting some soon.
6. Anaheim Canyon Tournament: Read the Daily Article to find out more. Not that we know that much to begin with. :-)
7. Century Holiday Tournament: Check out our report on this one.
8. Eagle Rock Tournament: Check out the report here also.
9. Brea Olinda Tournament: Saturday's games featured Norwalk beating Whittier Christian 58-56. Jon Stoa made two free throws with 25 seconds remaining to give Whittier Christian a one-point lead, but Norwalk's Steve Barragan made a three-pointer with 10 seconds left in the consolation game. The Heralds (6-7) had one last chance when Matt Martinez tipped in Stoa's miss at the buzzer, but time had expired. Stoa scored 28 points in the game.
10. Daily Pilot Christmas Tournament: Nope this isn't the Daily Pilot Tip-Off Classic, this is another one sponsored by the LA Times' regional and almost-daily paper. On Saturday Estancia rolled to victory over Corona del Mar 64-55 in double overtime. Estancia scored all its points in the two overtime periods on free throws, making 17 of 19. Estancia's Peter Anderson was eight for nine from the line in overtime, and Brett Valbuena was seven for eight. Three-point baskets by Ben Shaffer tied the score for Corona del Mar late in the fourth quarter and in the first overtime. Estancia, which is now 8-5 outscored Corona del Mar in the second overtime, 12-3.
11. San Diego Nike Prep Classic: Check our Daily Articles for reports and scores on this great tourney. And also be sure to check the USDHS site for more results from Pat McKinney.
12. Orange Holiday Classic: Again, read our Daily Article. It's not much, but its all we've got. You want more. Fine. Send it in.
13. Coast Classic: We don't have a clue about where this one is, but we know that they played the first round on Friday. And we know that Orange County Edison beat Antioch 59-32. Hwan Min and Jeff Harrell each scored 14 points for Edison, which outscored Antioch, 16-2, in the second quarter to take a 16-point halftime lead in the pool-play game.
14. Katella Klassic: Check out our Daily Article, and if you've got any other results, let us in on it, please.
15. Santa Barbara Tournament: Check the article for the details.
Also in addition to the other out-of-state tourneys we've been reporting on (e.g. Slam Dunk to the Beach, Ft. Meyers Classic, Reebok Vegas Holiday Classic), there are a few more involving SoCal teams as well, occurring this week, December 26th through the 30th. While most of you won't be situated to see these, here are some scattered results we've been able to pick up from various wires and e-mails we've received.
1. The Vegas Prep Tourney: Check our early report, and then check out the "official" site for this tournament at http://www.vsnlv.com, maintained by Varsity Sports Network.
2. Mountain View St. Frances Tournament: This one is played in Mountain View, in NoCal, and Orange County's University High defeated Palo Alto on Saturday 82-75. University outscored Palo Alto in the second half, 52-32, to overcome a 13-point deficit. Eric Palmer's three-pointer to open the fourth quarter put University ahead for good. Palmer scored 18 points and Larry and Chet Johnson each scored 14 for University, which is now 6-4 on the season; Palo Alto is 6-5 for the year.
