Santa Barbara Tourney: First Round
and One Second From Shantay--(December 29, 1997)

We put up the first round schedules and pairings for this tournament some time ago, both in a Daily Article and on our Tournament Listings page, so if you want to see the preview of this one, use the search engine thingie, and you can probably find it. But if you just want to read about the games, then this is da spot. We've been getting some results in our absence from our friends, including Shantay Legans, who has been reporting on his own games, and we're expecting some news from Scott Garson (hint hint) on the Santa Barbara games. For now, here are the results we've received:

In first round action, Moorpark beat Santa Monica (not St. Monica's, which is a different school, in the same city, so don't get confused), 49 to 41. Keith Donahue scored 29 points, including 12 on three-point shots, and he made nine of 11 free throws as the Musketeers from Moorpark improved to 9-3, with a pool play win. Donahue scored 11 points in the fourth quarter, when Moorpark outscored Santa Monica, 20-9. He also grabbed eight rebounds and had five steals. Kevin Lawrence added 10 points and pulled down 18 rebounds for Moorpark, which collected it's fourth consecutive victory with the win.

Also in first round action, Thousand Oaks beat Saugus 70-64, as Jason Dixon (Mason's younger cousin?) scored 18 points and Tim Chevalier and Bas Van Rhee added 14 apiece for the Lancers, who move up to 4-6 with the victory.

In other Friday games, Channel Islands beat El Modena, 76 to 69 with junior guard Dwight Sattiewhite scoring 28 points for the Raiders, who bettered their record to 8-1. Matt Garcia scored 24 points for the Vanguards, who dropped to 5-4 with the loss.

And in a Friday first round game, Dos Pueblos beat St. Joseph (not the Alameda team, but one from the Santa Maria area) by 13 points. Shantay Legans filled us in on the details, writing :"Well, we beat the #%&**#! offa them boys. They're the team we lost to up in Lompoc so we came ready to play! Kicked that butt! We didn't have two of our starters either: Tafari is in LA for X-mas vacation and Alex Jenkins is on a trip with his family somewhere. Dan Hoefer played tough and came up big with 16 points and I don't know how many rebounds, but he twisted his ankle so I hope he can play tomorrow. Zach Bruce stepped into Alex's place and did good and Ryan Holbrook was the MAN again. Gets those 3's to put the knife in their hearts. I got 25 points and 9 assists and 4 steals and even got me a few rebounds. I think we beat them by about 13.

The Santa Barbara News-Press described the game as follows:

"ShanTay Legans brought a touch of "Showtime'' to Sovine Gym on Friday night in the opening round of pool play at the Santa Barbara Holiday Classic basketball tournament.

With his twisting layups, soft jumpers and no-look passes, the lightning-quick 5-foot-8 guard totaled 25 points and nine assists to lead Dos Pueblos High to a 69-53 win over St. Joseph.

The victory avenged the Chargers' loss to the Knights in the championship game of the Lompoc Tournament. And it set them up for tonight's 6:30 p.m., pool-play matchup against Channel Islands at DP. Dos Pueblos is 6-2, while Channel Islands is 7-1."

The Chargers, who were playing without two starters, fell behind 8-0 but rallied to lead 24-16 by the end of the first quarter, sparked by Legans, Zack Bruce and Daniel Hoefer who each tallied six points in the period.

Legans saved a ball going out of bounds with a scoop pass to Ryan Holbrook who hit an 8-foot bank shot with once second left in the first quarter. David Sears hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Chargers a 39-31 halftime lead.

St. Joseph could get no closer than seven points in the second half.

Along with his 25 points, Legans also had eight steals and was 7-for-8 from the free-throw line. Hoefer totaled 16 points, 17 rebounds and four blocks. Bruce added nine points and eight rebounds.

Mike Hoffman led St. Joseph with 23 points. Matt Cova added 13 and Brett Krause had nine. St. Joseph drops to 6-4.``We didn't start out well, but we were executing much better at halfcourt,'' said DP coach Phil Sherman. ``ShanTay is a playmaker and is just a little bit away from being a perfect
point guard."

Sherman said starters Tafari Pipersburg and Alex Jenkins, who missed Friday's game, will be back tonight.``It will be a big game for us against Channel Islands,'' said Legans. ``We've got to keep playing hard."

Hoefer went to the bench with a slightly sprained ankle with 5:57 left in the game, but he returned less than two minutes later and didn't seem bothered by it.``The ankle's all right,'' the 6-7 senior said as he iced it after the game.

``Krause played great for St. Joseph. We're getting better and we're getting two starters back."

St. Joseph coach Ed Torres was impressed with the Chargers' physical play.``They were too physical inside,'' said Torres. ``They were too big. They're a good team."

Here are the "official" stats":

ST. JOSEPH - Cova 13, Williams 6, Hoffman 23, Krause 9, Draper 2.
DOS PUEBLOS - Legans 25, Sears 7, Archuleta 2, Holbrook 9, Bruce 9, Hoefer 16.
3-point goals-SJ 1 (Cova), DP 4 (Holbrook 2, Sears, Bruce).
Total fouls-SJ 17, DP 10.

In other first round games:

San Marcos 81, Cabrillo 68. The Royals poured in eight 3-pointers, including three by Matt James, to roll to the victory.

San Marcos, which improved to 7-1 was led by Sonny Oden's 22 points. Art Gutierrez added 16 and Randy Moharram tallied 15. James finished with 10. "We've had problems scoring, so for us to score 81 is an accomplishment,'' said Royals coach Chris Hantgin to the SB News-Press. "We were effective in the open court and got good shots in transistion. Sonny (Oden) had a real nice game. And Art (Gutierrez) and Randy (Moharram) stepped up with some key plays." San Marcos led 34-26 at halftime and 56-50 after three quarters.``The best thing we did tonight was we were real patient and played with good intensity,'' added Hantgin. Jay Richardson led Cabrillo with 21 points.

The stats:

CABRILLO - J. Richardson 21, Belton 2, James 20, Leininger 12, I. Richardson 4, Davis 6.
SAN MARCOS - Moharram 15, Gutierrez 16, Robertson 3, Ocen 22, Arndt 4, McOwen 5, James 10,
Nance 6.
3-point goals-C 1 (J. Richardson), SM 8 (James 3, Moharram, Gutierrez, Robertson, Ocen, Nance).
Total fouls-C 25, SM 20. Fouled out-J. Richardson, Davis, Leininger, Oden, Billings.

In another game on Friday, host Santa Barbara beat Desert Mountain 65-59 as Tony Freeman and Brent Williams each scored eight points in the fourth quarter as Santa Barbara rallied from a 42-40 deficit to beat the visitors from Scottsdale, Ariz. Freeman had 17 points, eight rebounds, three assists and six steals for the Dons, 5-4, who with the win got their fourth straight victory, and won all three games since Freeman became eligible. Williams, a sophomore, came off the bench to total 11 points. Point guard Daniel Worzella hit 5-of-7 shots to finish with 13 points and had no turnovers. " That's awesome,'' SBHS coach Jeff Lavender told the Santa Barbara New-Press. "It was Daniel's best game for us."

Here are the stats:
DESERT MOUNTAIN-Christianson 2, Brodt 5, Trapp 1, Hoffman 11, Hardy 12, Horrocas 14, Fosberg 2, McLaughlin 10, Cassman 3.
SANTA BARBARA-Ortiz 2, Worzella 13, Burke 3, Freeman 17, Williams 11, Christ 4, Allen 12, Kelly 3, Cordero-Rabe 0.
3-point goals-Hoffman 3, Hardy 2, Horrocas), SB (Worzella 3, Williams 2, Burke).
Fouled out-Horrocas.

And in yet another first round game, Bishop Diego beat Righetti, 48-43 as Christian Rovsek scored 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Cardinals (7-2). Joe Lammers and Sam Adcock added nine and eight points, respectively, for Bishop Diego, which saw an 11-point lead evaporate to three, 44-41, with two minutes to play. But the Cardinals made clutch free throws down the stretch to hold off the Warriors. The Cardinals were set to play Moorpark, a 49-41 winner over Santa Monica, at 6:30 p.m. in Saturday's second round. We don't have the results of that one yet, but will put it up as soon as we get it. Scott Smith scored 16 points to lead Righetti.

In Saturday's games, Dos Pueblos met Channel Islands, beating them 72-70, and again Shantay Legans provided the details (slightly edited here):

"First off, props to O.J. Thomas and his Channel Islands team. O.J. is a very good PG and gave me troubles all night. Channel Islands is a quick team with great shooters and rebounders. We didn't kick their booty, we outlasted them and if it wasn't for that last basket by Ryan Holbrook my MAN, we would have went to overtime. O.J. played great defense, so did his whole team and our team played sloppy, with turnovers all nite, especially in the last 3 minutes, I think we were trying to choke, but the buzzer saved us and we hung on for the win." The next day, Shantay provided a few stats, not for the team, but for you-know-who: "Here's my stats- I had 26 pts, 7 assists, 4 steals. 5/7 free throws, 9/11 FG and 1/3 3's." Great job Shantay.

We're still waiting for the official stats on this one, and when we get them, and some other scores and results, we'll put them up.

For now though, if you're going to be in the Santa Barbara area, don't miss this one.
