Southern
Section Scores (Except
Orange County) From Friday--(February 7, 1998)
Here we go, the big enchilada. The Southern Section almost has more teams playing on any given night than Division I NCAA ball. And we're trying to give you as complete a picture of what happened as we can. We've left Orange County (or at least most of it) out of this report; we'll have a separate one for it later today or tomorrow, as well as some breif notes on City Section games. For some of these games we only have a line score, and for others we've got full details. Where the details appear in other SoCalHoops articles, we've got links to them. Just click for additional details. This is not presently completed, and will be updated, so if you don't find the score of a game you're looking for, check back. Now let's roll:

Frontier League
Moorpark 82, Santa Paula 57
If shutting down Joey Riccio was the key to beating Santa Paula High, Moorpark had the master Friday night. Riccio was attacked from every angle and managed just two baskets, allowing Moorpark to embarrass first-place Santa Paula, 82-57, in a Frontier League boys' basketball game at Moorpark Moorpark outplayed The Times' No. 7-ranked team in the region from start to finish. Revenge was what Moorpark was seeking. Three weeks ago, Santa Paula overcame a 10-point deficit in the second quarter and beat Moorpark, 67-63. Riccio, the league's leading scorer, had 32 points in that one. A loss to Calabasas followed for the Musketeers and suddenly Moorpark was two games out of first place and left hoping for a miracle. If nothing else, Moorpark (18-6, 5-2 in league play), which is 1 1/2 games behind Santa Paula (18-5, 7-1) with three to play, wanted to make sure Santa Paula didn't think it was a pushover. Lawrence grabbed 19 of his team's 46 rebounds, including 12 in the first half, and scored 16 points. When Riccio ventured down the lane, Lawrence didn't exactly lay out the welcome mat. Riccio, a guard who averages 23.5 points a game, made only two of 14 shots. Riccio finished with 10 points and five assists. Moorpark scored the game's first 10 points--eight by Lawrence--and never let up Santa Paula managed to cut the lead to 23-18 midway through the second quarter on a jumper by Willie Zavala. But Moorpark outscored the Cardinals, 10-1, in the final 4:46 of the quarter for a 33-19 halftime lead. Moorpark built the lead to 46-26 on a basket by Byron Burnett with 4:21 to go in the third. Burnett finished with 17 points. Moorpark made 12 of 13 free throws in the fourth quarter. Keith Donahue had 24 points for Moorpark and made nine of 11 free throws. Shawn Corkery added 10 points.
Santa Clara 73, Calabasas 45
Santa Clara, which unexpectedly struggled most of this season avenged a prior loss in league play by beating Calabasas, which is without one of its better shooters in Spencer Harriton, who went out a few weeks ago with a broken ankle. Likewise Santa Clara has been without its star, Nick Jones. But Santa Clara may not be headed for a Division V title this year, but they still managed to have B.J. Ward, (6'-1" Jr. PG) one of the in SoCal, hit for 20 points, while Zavala collected 16 points in a game in which Santa Clara never trailed. In the first quarter, SC outslcored Calabasas 18-7, in the second they did it 18-10, and in the fourth it was 28-16; only in the third did they falter, and then only by three points as Calabasas outscored them 9-12. Santa Clara "improved" its season record to 9-11, the first overall losing season in a long, long time, and they are now 3-5 in league. Calabasasa is also 3-5 in league, but is 10-13 overall.
Golden League
Palmdale 66, Antelope Valley 64

Chadwick 48, Pasadena Poly 41
The Chadwick High team threw six different defenses at Pasadena Poly on Friday night and many were of the "gimmick" variety, designed to hold Pasadena Poly's two top scoring threats, Koko Archibong and Ryan Haden, from shooting. And while the defenses were largely successful in slowing Archibong and Haden down, they were also instrumental in helping Chadwick grab the win and lock up the Prep League title this year, as Chadwick improved to 10-14 overall, and 6-0 in league play. And Pasadena Poly, which was unbeaten through the CIF SS title game last year, now finishes second in league play, at 13-8 overall and 5-2 in league. Friday night, Pasadena Poly never seemed to find a rythym on offense. In fact, in the fourth quarter, Poly led 41-39, and then never scored another basket again for almost the last four minutes of the game. David Cann of Chadwick hit a 3 pointer with 3:37 remaining to put Chadwick ahead for good. Cann scored once more inside and Ryan Meier, who led all scorers with 20 then drove the lane for a layup, giving Chadwick a 5 pint lead. In that final stretch, Poly missed five shots and had two turnovers. Poly's leading scorers was Matt Easterlin, with 10, nine scored on three three-point plays. Haden had nine, while Marshall Duncan finished with six.

Santa Fe League
Bell-Jeff 86, Murphy 77
Ruben Douglas collected 45 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists for the Guards in a victory at Bell-Jeff (15-12, 7-4).
