Valley, Ontario, and More Riverside:
Some Friday Night Action--(February 7, 1998)
As the regular season begins to wind down and teams start to get ready for playoffs, there were some tough league games last night in and around SoCal, including some great games played in the Pomona Valley area (Pomona, Hacienda Heights, etc) and as far out as Riverside. Oh, and if you read our "Three From Friday" Riverside report, we've now discovered where "West Shores" is from. Read on to find out for yourselves, unless you already know. Read on anyway because it's the only way you'll find out the scores and highlights:
Arrowhead League
La Verne Lutheran 80, Anza Hamilton 49
La Verne Lutheran (11-6, 5-5) made it four wins in a row with a 80-49 Arrowhead League victory over visiting Anza Hamilton (1-9 in league). Ryan Wright scored 22 points and Mike Thomas added 16 for the Trojans.
Glendora 97, Damien 54
Casey Jacobsen had 51points, six assists, six rebounds, and five steals to lead host Glendora to a 97-54 Baseline League victory over Damien. Chris Clark added 20 points and seven boards for the Tartans (22-1, 8-0). Ryan Navarre led the Spartans with 16 points.
Upland 65, Claremont 40
Desmond Penigar scored 22 points and Ronnie Bullock added 17 as Upland (16-8, 6-2) rolled up a 65-40 Baseline League win over visiting Claremont. Jeff Cammon and Matt Santos had 10 assists apiece for the Highlanders while Tim Taylor finished with 13 points for the Wolfpack.
Metro League
Boys Republic 70, Lake Arrowhead Calvary Chapel 51
Tony Jones scored 31
points and Fred Moore had 10 points, 15 rebounds and seven steals
as Boys Republic (12-7, 12-0) took a 70-51 Metro League decision
at Lake Arrowhead Calvary
Chapel.
Miramonte League
Garey 59, Hacienda Heights 56
Garey (16-8, 7-1) retained first place in the Miramonte League by defeating Hacienda Heights Los Altos (12-11, 3-5) 59-56. The Vikings were led by Bobby Ward's 14 points and Darvin Means' 13 points and 15 rebounds.
Mt. Baldy League
Etiwanda 77, Montclair 60
Corey Landrum scored 20
points, Rudy Simpson had 16 and Gary Colbert added 13 points,
eight assists and six rebounds as Etiwanda (18-5, 8-0) defeated
Montclair, 77-60, in a Mt. Baldy League game at Montclair. Ronald
Williams led the Cavaliers with 18 points while Danny Ryan scored
15 and Garreth Read
added 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Ontario 77, Chaffey 63
Ontario (16-6, 5-3) defeated visiting Chaffey (1-7 in league) 77-63 in Mt. Baldy League action. Micah James had 15 points and Mike Niles 14 for the Jaguars.
Rancho Cucamonga 70, Alta Loma 58
Rancho Cucamonga earned a 70-58 Mt. Baldy League win over crosstown rival Alta Loma. The Cougars (19-5, 7-1) were led by Jamaal Gray's 20 points and Derrick Andrew with 14. Adam Parada had 18 points for the Braves (8-16, 1-7).
Olympic League
Ontario Christian 56, Cypress Brethren Christian 54
Tom Koolhaaf's layup with 15 seconds left in overtime gave Ontario Christian (9-13, 2-6) a 56-54 Olympic League victory at Cypress Brethren Christian (6-17, 1-7). Rommel Agee scored 9 of his 11 points in the fourth quarter and overtime periods for the Knights and Ryan Fuqua added 23 points, seven steals and nine assists. Mike Thomas' free throw with four seconds left in overtime allowed the Warriors to tie the game at 48 and force the extra period.
Sierra League
Ayala 56, West Covina 38
Jack May led Ayala with 15 points and 10 rebounds as the two-time defending Sierra League champion Bulldogs took a one-game lead into the final week with a 56-38 victory over visiting West Covina. Shane Unrein added 13 points for the fifth-ranked Bulldogs (19-5, 7-1).
Diamond Bar 85, Rowland Heights Rowland 53
Diamond Bar (20-4, 6-2) built a 25-point halftime lead on the way to an 85-53 Sierra League romp over Rowland Heights Rowland (17-6, 6-2). Brian Pinchon's game-high 27 points led the Brahmas, while teammate Brad Wright tossed in 20 points with five assists and six steals.
Valle Vista League
San Dimas 52, Northview 44
San Dimas (20-4, 10-0) defeated Northview (15-8, 7-3), 52-44, to clinch their seventh Valle Vista league championship in a row. The top players for San Dimas were David Malana, who had 14 points, and Josh Smith, who scored 10 points and had 10 rebounds. Rahmaan Wallace led Northview with 11 points.
Bonita 57, Workman 48
David Juiliano scored 20 points and grabbed six rebounds as Bonita (11-14, 5-6) earned a 57-48 Valle Vista League decision over Industry Workman (2-8 in league). Jake Brosterhous added nine points with four assists and Jason Barber grabbed eight rebounds for the Bearcats.
Victory League
Ambassador Christian 115, West Shores 23
Ok, so now we know where "West Shores" is, and where the water is too. It's in Salton City on the Salton Sea in Southern Riverside County. They had better stick to picking figs and fishing as Chris Como scored a game-high 33 points and Micah Lombard added 29 as Ambassador Christian (17-4, 10-0) hammered the West Shore team in a 115-23 Victory League win at Salton City West Shores. West Shores in now winless at 0-9 in league. We thought you should know.
