[Note: These are the program notes we wrote for the Official Best in the West Program. We know for a fact that many of the team profiles were edited to save space in the program. So, we thought we'd at least make some use of the original material by posting it up here. Additionally, with some of these teams, we've already done previews here at SoCalHoops, and where they exist, we'll link to them.

Upland HS (Upland, CA): We've already featured a full profile on Upland here at SoCalHoops, so if you want more in depth information, check it out.   But here's a capsule profile for the BIW: Coach Jeff Klein's Highlanders have four consecutive 20-win seasons and three consecutive SS-CIF Division I-AA quarterfinal appearances; last season, they beat Etiwanda then lost to Ayala in the second round, finishing with a remarkable 23-4 record, 8-2 in Baseline League. The Highlanders also won three pre-season tournaments last year (Upland, Rancho Cucamonga, and Midland Texas), and won at the Nike Extravaganza. They feature great guard play, excellent wings, tough forwards, and a deep 16-man roster. Up front there's Pac-10 University of Washington-signee DeMarcus Williams (6'-8" Sr. PF/C) who at 250 lbs presents a formidable presence inside. Upland also features high-scoring Kirk Snyder (6'-5" Jr. F), big man Jason Johnson (6'-7" Sr. C), 250lb Lionel Davis (6'-6" JR. F/C). In the backcourt, Upland has lots of potent guards: Lefthander Kevin White (6'-0" Jr. PG) and right-handed Sheldon Pace (5'-10" Jr. PG) are both exceptionally good. Besides the two points, Upland has at least seven other shooting guards who can put the ball through the hoop: Prentice Harris (6'-1" Jr. SG) one of this year's team captains, Jesse Pruitt (6'-1" Jr. SG) and Brett Williams (6'-3" Jr. SG) two pure shooters, Kyle Bechler (6'-1" Jr. SG) a three-point specialist, Brett Williams (6'-3" Jr. SG) a transfer from Chino, Jason Hathaway (6'-2" Jr. G) a good perimeter defender, Matt Christensen (6'-0" Sr. SG) who will get minutes off the bench, and Eric Hoppe (6'-0" Jr. G). Out on the wings, look primarily for three guys, Jason Harris (6'-4" Jr. SG/SF), Tye-Juan Hatter (6'-5" So. SG/SF), and Milan Irvin (6'-0" Sr. G/F). A very versatile and deep team.
