[Note: These are the program notes we wrote for the Official Best in the West Program. We know for a fact that many of the team profiles were edited to save space in the program. So, we thought we'd at least make some use of the original material by posting it up here. Additionally, with some of these teams, we've already done previews here at SoCalHoops, and where they exist, we'll link to them. |
Tampa Catholic HS (Tampa, Florida): Coach Don Dziagwa's Crusaders are a perennial 3A favorite each year, and this year theyll get to compete against such other annual powers in Florid like Jacksonville Ribault, Miami Pace, and Cardinal Newman. While those names might not mean much to California hoops fans they are well known among those who follow basketball on the "other" coast. Tampa Catholic is the only out-of-state participant in the BIW, and they feature some excellent players: Starters returning include Brian Garcia (6'-3" Sr. SF/PF) who led the teams in rebounds, Randall Black (6'-5" Sr. SG/SF) who was the team's leading scorer, and Rocky Harrison (6'-2" Sr. SG/SF), the team's most athletic player. Others to watch include Ty Tancredi (5'-11" Sr. PG), a very talented ball handler from Indiana, James Dennis (6'-5" Jr. SG/SF), a talented wing player, and Marcus Edwards (6'-0" Jr. SG/PG), who returns home to California for the BIW. And don't forget about the man in the middle, Idalgo Wiliams (6'-11" Jr. C), a 250 lb. shotblocker, rebounder and scoring threat. Others returning from last season include Rene Rodriguez (5'-10" Sr. PG), Dan Gura (6'-3" Sr. F), Tommy Stracke (6'-3" Sr. F) and Spencer Hodges (6'-4" Sr. SF). Up from a 17-2 JV team are Gary Garcia (6'-1" Jr. G), Erjaam Hayes (5'-9" Jr. G), Mike Faedo 6'-4" Jr. F), and Keith Duhart (5'-8" Jr. GF). Tampa plays an up-tempo game, running, pressing and constantly attacking and they'll be fun to watch.
