[Note: These are the program notes we wrote for the Official Best in the West Program. We know for a fact that many of the team profiles were edited to save space in the program. So, we thought we'd at least make some use of the original material by posting it up here. Additionally, with some of these teams, we've already done previews here at SoCalHoops, and where they exist, we'll link to them.

Serra HS (Gardena HS): Coach Dwan Hurt's Serra Cavaliers are again loaded, and from last year's Southern Section CIF Division IV-AA Championship team a number of top players return, including San Diego State-signee Aerick Sanders (6'-9" Sr. F), who has become a truly prolific shotblocker and an explosive scorer, a big man who can run the break and finish with a soft touch or an authoritative slam. Serra also returns wing man Doyle Cole (6'-6" Sr. SG/SF), a guy with a very quick first step, a good shot and the ability to play way above the rim. D.J. Wyatt (5'-10" Sr. PG) will handle the point, and he's a pure passer who can drive, penetrate and score but is just as good at feeding the post or hitting the open man on a wing. The rest of the squad is either new or represents some of the second-generation players (or third), and that includes Randal Odums (6'-1" Jr. G) whose brother Ryan (now graduated) was a starter last season, and Eugene Jeter (5'-8" So. G) who also had a sibling play for the Cavaliers. Among the untested players to watch for during the Best in the West are guards Jermoe Foster (5'-11" Sr. G), Kelechi Ekeledo (5'-11" Sr. G), shooters Jamie Washington (6'-2" Sr. G), Andrew Stevens (6'-0" Sr. G), Dwany Bates (6'-0" Jr. G), Shannon McLin (6'-2" Jr. G), and a talented and deep pool of forwards including Keon Kirkpatrick (6'-5" Jr. F), Taron Williams (6'-4" Jr. F), Pierre Johnson (6'-5" Jr. F) and Austin Jackson (6'-5" Jr. F).
