Gilbert Arenas Makes Mark With 20 &
Mark Makes His Own With 20--(Jan. 28, 1999)
Huh? Here's what we're talking about: Gilbert Arenas set a school record with 20 free throws. And Mark Cannon of Chatsworth had 20 points, a game high yesterday against Kennedy.
We already posted up the results of Gilbert Arenas' . . .er. . . Grant's game yesterday against Canoga Park. In that game, Gilbert scored another 46 points. 20 of them were free throws. That set a school record with the makes (20) and the attempts (25), and in the last three games, Gilbert has scored 42 (against Poly), 47 (against Reseda) and yesterday 46. He's averaging now almost 38 ppg.
He also had 13 rebounds and 8 steals. Not to be overlooked in all of this, is Grant's other scorer, Daniel Tarr, who had 14 points. Not many other Lancers scored: Krishna Evans had 5, Rashawd Winston had 3, Jason Buttikofer had 2, and Edison had 2.
Canoga Park was not without it's scorers, and Mike Gomes had 7 points and 15 rebounds, while Ferguson had 10, and Eddie Hernandez had 2 and 10 rebounds. Limaskul had 15 and Mike Bell also had 15 points.
Grant is on a roll, but remains tied with Sylmar, and the Spartans had a fairly easy time of it as they rolled over North Hollywood 79-57. Both Grant and Sylmar are tied at 4-1 in league play. Sylmar is 17-5 overall and Grant is 16-4. Jeremiah Turner was the high scorer for the Spartans over the Huskies with 19; Dominic Johnson had 22 for NoHo, which is now 11-8 overall and 3-2 in league.
And over in the Northwest Valley, Mark Cannon (6'-0" Sr. PG) hit an improbable three-point bank shot to lift Chatsworth over Kennedy 59-56. Even Eric Sondheimer is becoming a believer when it comes to Chatsworth, and they are now ranked No. 5 by the LA Times Valley Edition. Not bad for a team that couldn't get much recognition early this year. Cannon lit it up yesterday for 20 points in the game.
Other scorers for Chatsworth were Ronald Ruffin with 5, Richard Harrison 10, Chris Gales 2, Marlik Morris 6, Bobby Bowlin 14, and Adam Drell 2.
And a couple of other notes:
Perusing through the Times today (Thursday), we found these two little blurbs. First this:
"Chaminade Coach Jeff Young and All-Southern Section forward Scott Borchart want everyone to know they are staying put. Young said rumors have been circulating that he might leave the West Hills school. And Borchardt keeps having to tell people he's not transferring to Simi Valley."
Then there was this:
"Imagine if Gilbert Arenas of Grant, averaging 36.3 points and Mike Yildiz of Bell-Jeff, averaging 24.1 points were on the same team. 'You'd probably need about four balls,' Bell Jeff Coach Eli Essa said. In fact Arena and Yildiz were teammates last season at Grant."
As to the last one, we wrote something pretty similar last weekend. Actually it's a pretty obvious "what if" for those who followed the Lancers last year. Evidently Yildiz (much like Kent Dennis who was formerly at Bell-Jeff with Ruben Douglas but transferred to Canoga Park) and Arenas really needed an extra ball or two on the floor. Anyway, here's the link to what we wrote last weekend.
And as for the Chaminade-Jeff Young-Scott Borchart story, well, we also wrote pretty much the same thing with our own article yesterday. Actually, with this one, it looks like Jeff Young was pretty serious about wanting to stop the rumors of his and Borchart's "departures." Evidently not only did he e-mail a letter to us, but he must have notified all the local papers as well. Guess he's serious about staying.
