Rumors Be Damned: Young & Borchart
Will Stay At Chaminade--(Jan 27, 1999)

We've heard lots of rumors lately about Chaminade.  And we're not talking about the usual Mission league rivalry stuff, things like "[Fill in the blank] school sucks" or "my school can beat your school" type of comments.  Nope, we're talking about things like, "Oh, Jeff Young, the coach at Chaminade, will be leaving to coach at the college level after this year. . . " or stuff like "When Jeff Young leaves, Scott Borchart is transferring to [fill in the blank] high school. . . "

We just want to put these rumors to rest to the extent we can help to do so.  Jeff Young tell us that he's not leaving Chaminade any time soon.  We had a chance to talk with him at the Double Pump Hoops Challenge on January 16, and he told us that these rumors were sheer nonsense.  He also wrote to us this afternoon and said, " The Coach at Chaminade High School is Jeff Young and it will be Jeff Young as long as they will have me. I like it here, I am comfortable here, and most of all, the young men I have had the privilege of coaching are outstanding."   Young continued by saying,  "I am a coach at Chaminade until they get rid of me."

We also checked with some of our sources in and around Chaminade, and they assured us that not only was Young not leaving for greener pastures, neither is Borchart thinking of transferring out.  Sure, Borchart will leave one day.  But it won't be until he's ready to move on to the D-I college level, at least according to our sources.   And why should he.  Chaminade is the defending Southern Section Champion in Division III-A, and they have an extremely good shot at repeating again this year (note: Alemany and Crespi, their two toughest league competitors, are in different divisions this year). And it also looks like Bishop Montgomery and Serra are in D-IIIAA, while Chaminade is in D-IIIA, the smallest of all the divisions, with just 20 teams).  With a run in the playoffs, and a potential bye in the first round, it's possible that Chaminade will only have to win three games to recapture a Southern Section title.  Where else can a player get a shot like that at returning to the State Championship Tournament?

We just thought you should know.
