AV cancels boys, girls basketball games after melee
By MERISA JENSEN Valley Press Sports Editor Dec 9, 2023
The effects of the melee between the Highland and Antelope Valley girls basketball teams on Thursday are yet to be fully known, but some consequences arose on Friday.
The Highland-Antelope Valley boys basketball game was cancelled on Friday, which the district thought was best, according to Highland athletic director Chris Paxton.
Antelope Valley also cancelled its girls basketball game against The Palmdale Aerospace Academy, which was also scheduled for Friday, and Monday’s game against Lancaster Baptist.
“We had a couple of games that we cancelled, due to the investigation that was (Friday) and Monday,” AV athletic director Jason Chronister said.
Both schools are conducting their own investigations about Thursday’s melee, which included players and fans, with 2:41 left in the third quarter.
“Right now, it’s a fluid situation,” Chronister said. “We’re preparing our investigation, we’ve talked to CIF and we’re just addressing it. Highland and us, it’s a coordinated effort to figure out what happened.”
Whether or not that game will be concluded will be up to CIF officials.
“It was in the third quarter and we haven’t broached that subject yet,” Chronister said. “That’s something for CIF to determine.”
The boys game, however, should be rescheduled for another date.
“The boys did nothing, so it is my hope that we will reschedule that game for the guys,” Chronister said.
Chronister said Antelope Valley will most likely turn in its findings, which includes cell phone video evidence from fans, to CIF on Monday.
CIF’s fighting and assaultive policy states a first offense for fighting will equal a three- to six-game suspension as determined by the Section. A second offense disqualifies the player for the remainder of the season.
Both the Bulldogs and the Antelopes will likely see suspensions.
Chronister said he expects the AV girls basketball team to play its Golden League games next week at Quartz Hill on Tuesday and at home against Knight on Thursday.
“The league games will continue,” he said. “Per the league constitution if something happens, you just bring up your JVs and play. …
“Our goal is to play the league games and to follow protocols and hopefully things will work itself out.”
CIF will most likely make their ruling available after Monday next week.
