: There are some professional and passionate referees out there but I have noticed the old generation of referees are the lazy guys not making any calls. I understand they want to get paid and are too old to run down the court but they need to stop robbing CIF for their money because they aren't working! I like when I see some young refs on the court because I know there will be more active officiating on the court.

There's obviously a shortage and there are plenty of officials who can't physically do the job any more who are still out there. But there is no reason for an official to not know the rules, not know the mechanics of where to be, not communicating with the table so there is always a "who was that foul on?" question that never fully gets answered.
I've always thought that being a ref would be a great job for a former player while in college. I don't see a whole lot of effort to recruit new refs. I hear a lot of the "there's a shortage" talk, but not much effort to bring in new blood, teach them the game and rotate them in. I'd guess because new blood would mean cycling out those that can't do the job- but refs would never admit one of their own shouldn't be out there anymore. And on it goes.. guys that can't move anymore, guys that don't care enough to do the job right, and more complaining..
