No New Leagues for LA City, and Only 2 Refs--(October 28, 1997)
There likely won't be any new basketball leagues (or in any other sports either) for LA City Schools at least until the 1999-2000 season, even though the Los Angeles City Section Interscholastic Athletic Committee voted this past Monday to reconsider proposals for releaguing next year. The LA City Section of the CIF will form a subcommittee to consider the releaguing. Monday's vote follows a vote taken last month by the IAC in which it was proposed that the current "conference" format of competition be abandoned. That vote went down to defeat and it seemed that the current LA City Section Leagues and Conferences would remain unchanged.
Commissioner Barbara Fiege reportedly said that the reason the original proposal was voted down was that the proposed new leagues of teams either made little sense, or were simply objectionable to most of the IAC. Fiege agreed that even if the new subcommittee were able to come up with an acceptable proposal for releaguing soon, it's probably already too late to implement it for next year's 1998-99 season, and thus any new leagues will have to wait until the 1999-2000 season.
The IAC also Monday expressed it's opposition to having three-member officiating crews for basketball playoffs, something which the Southern Section has already voted to approve. Three refs sounds like a good idea to us at SoCalHoops, but then we're not surprised that the LA City Section would vote the way it did, given the extra financial burden that a couple hundred bucks might make for a few playoff games.
By the way, the current league configurations are at SoCalHoops, together with all the schedules for LAUSD City Section Basketball.
