Prep Preview and Report
Campbell Hall Prep --October 14, 1997
I had a talk today with Brian Haloossim, the Varsity Coach at Campbell Hall. Brian is in his first year at Campbell Hall, having come over from CSUN where he was an assistant last year under coach Bobby Braswell. Haloossim was also the assistant coach at Palisades High for four years, and was there during the year Pali played Crenshaw in the CIF Regionals, losing only after double overtime. Haloossim has impeccable credentials, and if anyone can work with this program to improve it and preserve it, Haloossim can. He told me that he believes this will be a "building year". His biggest concern is that the school becomes as well known for what it can do in the athletic arena as it is academically. As he put it, "When it comes to academics, there are few who can compete with us." He added though, "My job is to carry that same success over to the athletic field so that people associate those same qualities with our basketball program and Campbell Hall athletics."
The roster this year:
Josh Glass (Sr. 5'-11" PG)-- There are few point guards with quicker feet, better lateral moves or court vision than Glass. Why he isn't being recruited by west coast schools is a mystery to me. There are few with better ability to penetrate off the dribble than Glass in SoCal. He can go left, he can go right, and has a great jump-stop J out to three point range. If he can keep his game under control, he should be somebody's idea of a nice small D-1 point. He is a tenacious defender in the open court and has great vision and anticipation. His best attribute: He's a great passer; I'd just like to see him do more passing, and sooner, because he sometimes has a tendency to get stuck too deep on penetration under the hoop before dishing. His biggest job will be to translate his court skills and playing ability to his teammates. I don't think this kid is being recruited, and that's really a shame, because there are few PG's in SoCal who are as quick and as smart as Glass. Lavin, are you listening. . .Brandon Loyd will be gone next year. . .hmmm. Baron might need a backup every now and then. . .
Ronny Polk (Sr. 6-2 G/SF)--Ronny is a very much improved player from last year. He has great leaping ability and should be a major component this year. Look for him to start and get lots of playing time. Nice shot, good handle.
Greg Drobnick (Soph. 5-10" G)--complementing Polk and Glass in the backcourt will be Drobnick, who has lots of court savvy, and is a great shooter. He's young, but will get lots of experience this year.
Brandon Woodard (Jr. 6-3 F/PF)-- Brandon has good leaping ability, a nice shot and good strength. I haven't seen him play, but Haloossim seemed impressed with his work ethic and his athleticism, and his shot.
Larry Cole (Sr. 6-5 C)-- Cole is a big boy. Real big. But new to basketball. Never played before. His real forte is volleyball. How good is he? He's ranked as one of the Top 20 Volleyball players in the country. Nope, that's not "county", but country, with an "r". As in "USA". Apparently this kid's got a vertical of about 4 feet, and can slam and block. Oh, and he also plays football. Haloossim thinks he's got great potential and will do very well this year. Gotta go check him out to see if he's for real.
The assistant coaches are Cleveland Jackson, who played at the University of Georgia, and was also the JUCO player of the year at Butler in Georgia from 90-92, and Matt Andrewes who was formerly a forward on last year's CSUN squad coached by Braswell.
