ARC/Slam-N-Jam Las Vegas Christmas
Challenge Tournament-- (10/21/97)
More great tournament news for youth basketball. This year, ARC (Rich Goldberg) and Slam-N-Jam (Issy Washington) will combine again to put on what may be one of the finest youth basketball tournaments in the country: The ARC/Slam-n-Jam Las Vegas Christmas Challenge, from December 27 through December 30, 1997.
The tournament this year will feature teams from all over the country, including some of the top youth basketball talent and future stars. Games will be played at Cheyenne High School and Palo Verde High School. There is an entry fee of $395.00 per team with a 4 game minimum. Age brackets will be Boys: 10U/4th grade, 11U/5th grade, 12U/6th grade, 13U/7th grade, and 14U/8th grade. Girls: 5th-6th grade division and 7th-8th grade division. Age is determined as of September 1, 1998.
I had a chance to talk this morning with both Issy Washington and Rich Goldberg, and both of them were excited about the tournament, especially after this last summer's Las Vegas Grand Finale, which went from 60 teams in 1996 to 137 of the nation's top youth club and AAU teams. Rich told me that the plan for next year's Las Vegas Grand Finale (to be held in July), will be even more ambitious, and they are anticipating hosting more than 200 teams from around the country and Canada. This last summer's tournament featured teams such as the Arizona Stars, New York Gauchos, and teams from Minnesota, Houston, Hawaii and British Columbia.
Given the large turnout this last summer, and the fact that the tournament is taking place in a warmer climate during the Christmas break, Rich expects a very large turnout this year. ARC/Slam-n-Jam have also arranged some special accomodations for teams, and the official hotel will be the Sunrise Suites (reservations 800-362-4040). Mention the Las Vegas Christmas Challenge, and they will offer a special $35.00 per night rate for a suite. Hard to beat that anywhere.
More news and details will be posted here, including a listing of who's coming, rosters and schedules as the tournament date approaches.
