Awesome, Baaaby! Vitale Signs His
Own Letter of Intent--(November 12, 1997)

How fitting that on the first day of signing National Letters of Intent for college prospects for basketball, Dick Vitale signs his own new "Letter of Intent" with ESPN.

ESPN executive vice president of production Howard Katz announced Wednesday that college basketball analyst Dick Vitale had agreed to a seven-year contract extension with the cable network through the year 2004.

In a press release issued today, Vitale stated, "I'm absolutely flattered, amazed and proud to be part of the ESPN family. I've been with ESPN since the start, and I pinch myself every day. And being involved with college basketball has been awesome, baby!"

According to the press release, the 58-year-old Vitale has "been with ESPN since just after its launch in September 1979. His responsibilities include game analysis, television and radio commentary, programming specials and contributions to ESPN SportsZone and ESPN - The Magazine."

The former college and NBA coach captured the 1994 Cable ACE award as cable's top sports analyst. Vitale, who also works for ABC Sports, has also been recognized by his peers as the American Sportscasters Association Sports Personality of the Year.

Geez, only seven more years of "Awesome, baby!" ??
