Ventura College Cancels Its Tourney--(November 6, 1997)
Ventura College isn't sure it will have a team this year. Neither are any of the other teams that were scheduled to play the school. So the Ventura Tournament, scheduled for November 28-30 has been cancelled according to AD Dick James.
In an apparently unrelated incident, and just when you thought things couldn't possibly get any worse for this program, six of the Ventura players were evicted from their apartment complex, a three-bedroom apartment which they all shared. According to a report in the LA Times this morning, the players were not given any reason for their eviction. The Times did report, though, that the complex was the scene last month of a racially motivated attack on September 18, in which several of the VC players, who are black, were subjected to racial taunts by people identified as gang members in the area.
Pretty understandable why some of the VC players might not come back at all. No coach, no tournament, and now nowhere to live either. From our perspective, this is truly a tragic situation, and a waste of a great basketball program, and fine talent. Our condolences and best wishes to the players in either regrouping and coming back from these challenges, or in finding a new home in which to play.
