USF Signs Four; St.Joe's Will Go 5 for 5--(November 17, 1997)
According to the Oakland Tribune, the University of San Francisco Dons have signed Hondre Brewer, a 6'-9" center from Alameda's St. Joseph-Notre Dame High. The Dons also signed 6'-8" center Darrell Tucker -- a first-team All-ANG Newspapers player--from Oakland's McClymond's High. Both signed their letters of intent last week.
Today, USF also reported that it signed James Lee, a 6'-5" F/SG from the now defunct Ventura College program, which was disbanded this year due to recruiting violations and other improprieties committed by former coach Virgil Watson. Reportedly, Lee will redshirt this year, and will still have three more years of eligibility because of the suspension of Ventura's program this year. He was originally a highly touted recruit from Artesia High who had committed to USC in 1996, but did not qualify.
Finally, USF has also reportedly received a letter of intent from Glen Summerall (6'-5" SG) from Fontana High School, Fontana , California. Summerall is a quick, athletic player, with a nice J and good penetration.
An interesting footnote to the St.Joseph's signees this year is that it's possible that all five of the St.Joe's starting five will sign with D-I schools this year. In addition to Brewer signing with USF, Ray Young signed with UCLA, Rene Jacques, a 6'-1" point guard, signed with Sacramento State, and guard Nate Murase and forward Julian Kline are expected to sign with in the spring signing period.
