Who Are The Top Rated
California Players?--(November 5, 1997)

As the season is about to get underway, let's look at how some of the top players were ranked by the experts after the summer camps and tournaments. Who does recruiting expert Clarke Francis think the top players are from California? Hoop Scoop has made it's list of the top prospects from this last summer available publicly. We've combed through the list and extracted only the California players. Here they are, with Francis' subjective rankings (as compared to hundreds of other kids from all over the country), listed by name, height, class, position and school.

As you go through this list you'll see that a pattern develops with certain schools, such as Compton Dominguez, Washington, Alameda St. Joseph, University High San Diego, and a few others. Does all the top talent only go to a few schools? Not necessarily, but it does tend to "gravitate" together (there are many who believe its not so much gravity as other forces that are at work, but that's a different story). We don't necessarily agree with this list, and considering all of the top talent in SoCal, there are an awful lot of names not on Francis' list. Remember, these are players who attended national camps, played in national tournaments this summer, or who have been scouted for years by the recruiting services.

The rankings for seniors are out of 600 players ranked, juniors 450 ranked, sophomores 225, and freshman only 65 ranked nationally. Clearly not an exhaustive list when you consider that the NCAA estimates that there are more than 500,000 high school basketball players nationally each year.

So what does this list really mean? We don't know, except that each of the players listed is very good already, and some will certainly get a lot better.
