Stanford Gets More Help
For SoCal Guys Next Year--(November 14, 1997)

Next year Stanford will be without seniors Kamba Tshionyi, Mark Thompson, and Pete Van Elswyk. So to replace two of them, and add some depth at the guard and small forward spot, Stanford has now signed and received letters of intent from Kyle Logan (6'-5" Sr. G, Mercersburg Academy, Mercersburg, Pa.), and Nick Robinson (6'-6" SG/SF Liberty High School, Liberty, Mo.). Robinson, a Mormon, will not enroll at Stanford until the year 2000, after completing his two-year Mormon mission.

Logan, now at prep school, averaged 21 ppg, 7 rebounds and three assists per game last year as a junior at St. Maria Goretti High School in Hagerstown, Maryland, shooting 58 percent from the floor, and 85 percent from the line. Logan was a regional all-star in the central Pennsylvania, and the Western-Maryland area.

According to a press release issued by Stanford, Coach Mike Montgomery stated, "Kyle fits our immediate needs for next year's varsity. Kyle can play the point and off-guard, and small forward. He has tremendous potential and gives us excellent quickness and athletic ability."

Robinson could be likely to fill the shoes of either Weems or possibly Sauer, both of whom will have graduated by 2000. Robinson averaged 14 ppg and 7 boards last year. His team had a 23-3 record, and was defeated only at the state playoffs. He was a two-year starter, all-league and all-district player, and also was named all-state. The Stanford release also quoted Montgomery as saying about Robinson: "Nick has great potential. He is a tremendous young man, who will be even more mature when he joins us after completing his Mormon mission."

Both of these guys are pretty impressive students too. Logan scored in the top five percent of the 10,000 Black Americans who requested consideration in the 1998 Achievement Program when they took the 1996 PSAT/National Merit qualifier. Robinson has a 4.0 gpa, belongs to the National Honor Society, and is listed in 'Who's Who Among American High School Students.'
