CSUN's O'Quinn Suspended. . . .Again--(November 21, 1997)

CSUN is 1-20 against Pac-10 schools, and is ranked No. 137 of 308 Division I schools by the Sporting News. So it's little wonder that they lost last night to OSU, not one of the brighter lights in the Pac-10. Oh, did we mention that CSUN also committed 25 fouls in addition to its 32 turnovers?

There's another reason CSUN didn't fare so well against Oregon State: Mike O'Quinn, the scoring leader and the team leader in suspensions did not fly to Oregon with the team and did not play. He was suspended for getting into a verbal sparring match with coach Bobby Braswell during a conditioning drill at Tuesday's practice.

Too bad for O'Quinn. He missed an opportunity to match up against his cousins: Corey and Sonny Benjamin (see we told you the SoCal connections are everywhere). O'Quinn was already suspended once this season, and this is the second time. Braswell says that he'll meet with him today, and expects that he'll be reinstated.

For the record, O'Quinn has been suspended the most of any player on CSUN's team. He was a transfer from LMU, where he was also suspended once.

Also for the record, CSUN was supposed to play not only OSU, but also Oregon on its trip through the Northwest, but Duck's first year coach Ernie Kent refused the game, reportedly because Braswell was also a top candidate for the Oregon job. Braswell was an Oregon assistant for four years before coming to Northridge.

CSUN has a breather for the next eight days, until November 29, when it takes on Pepperdine at the Matadome on the Northridge campus. We'll have a game preview before the game, so keep checking in at SoCalHoops.
