Kris and Jelani Coming Back Soon--(November 16, 1997)

Seems that the Arizona Star News is really turning into a great source for news of UCLA, given the heated rivalry of the last few years between the schools, and the need for good "intelligence" work in the local press in Arizona. This morning, reporter Javier Morales writes in his column that there is "evidence" that both McCoy and Gardner will return soon:

"Further reason to believe Jelani McCoy and Kris Johnson will return to the Bruins some time soon: Both have been attending UCLA practices lately. Johnson might return as soon as Dec. 13, and McCoy could be with the Bruins for the Jan. 3 game against Arizona. They can't return soon enough. UCLA struggled with a Lithuanian team Thursday, winning 92-80, after their opponent lost by 22 points to Pepperdine, 22 to Stanford and 32 to Santa Clara."

We agree with both assessments, that is that they will both soon return, and that other than the play of Baron Davis and the three-point shooting of Billy Knight, the Bruins seemed to be firing on only four of five pistons, out of sync and could really use a front line to take some of the pressure off the guard play. We're not sure about Santa Clara, but having seen both Stanford and Pepperdine already this year, we feel pretty confident in saying that if they played UCLA today (notwithstanding anything Baron might do), both could probably take the Bruins right now without a lot of difficulty.
