I'm a Cowboy. . .He's a Cowboy. . . McMillian's a Cowboy--(November 20, 1997)

You know that Grant Hill commercial for Sprite?. . .Yeah, you know, the one where Grant Hill is dressed like a cowboy to show how marketable he is. Well now Chris McMillian can really sing it, and with some feeling. He had verbally committed several months ago to Wyoming, but this last week sent his National Letter of Intent, and it's been confirmed. He's a Wyoming Cowboy.

McMillian will be joined at Wyoming next year by four other signees: Pasha Bains (6'-4" Sr. G/F, Richmond Secondary School, Richmond, British Columbia), Josh Davis (6'-8" Sr. F, Salem Academy, Salem, Oregon) John Pettersson (6'-9" F from Lulea, Sweden who plays for Plannja Basketball, an amateur club team), and Jimmy White (6'-5" Sr. G/SF, Western High School, Las Vegas, Nevada).

McMillian, a 5'-10" point guard from Brea-Olinda High School in Brea, California is one of the premier point guards on the West Coast in this year's senior class. McMillian averaged 17.0 ppg, 7.0 assists and 4.0 steals last season, leading his Brea Olinda High team to a 26-4 record, and the CIF semifinals, along with shooting guard Sean Wink, now at Northwestern, and forward Jason Skrifvars, currently at Montana State.

McMillian's AAU team -- the Inland Empire Ballers and Players (IEBP) was coached by Keith Howard. Chris is the type of player who can push the ball up the court with great speed, and he's got good shooting touch as well, and he's really a pass-first type of point, who looks first for the open man off the fast break, and he's got a nice first step and cross-over to break down a defense. McMillian has played at the Pump Easter Classic, the EBO Fresno tourney, the Pump Brothers' Double Pump West Coast All-Stars and impressed a lot of people this year.

And his Brea-Olinda team should be a whole lot of fun to watch this year. They're very talented, tall, physical, and if McMillian ever gets tired, there's another little point guard named Kyle Dodd, who we're pretty sure you'll be hearing a lot of in the future. They sure know how to grow those little point guards down in Brea.

Wyoming's official web site features an official press release and a statement about the recent signees from Coach Larry Shyatt. He had this to say about McMillian:

"Chris McMillian is coming to our program at a great time because we will be losing two outstanding perimeter players next year in Gregg Sawyer and Jeron Roberts. Because Chris shoots the ball so well, he will have the opportunity to lead this team as both a point guard and in the scoring category. I as a coach have never been afraid of playing small players, in fact if anything I've been attracted to small players. At Providence we won the Big East Championship with a little man by the name of Abdul Abdullah, 5' 6". And at Clemson we had a great deal of success, in large part due to a small guy named Terrell McIntyre, 5' 9". I'm very excited to have Chris and his family as part of our Cowboy family."

McMillian was also recruited by Pepperdine, San Diego State, Washington. The official Wyoming site's press release notes that "his parents are Janice and Willie McMillian."
