A Few Other SoCal Small College Tournaments--(November 23, 1997)

In addition to the Fullerton and the Mulligan Tournaments which we've reported on, there have been many other small college and JC pre-season tournaments over the past few days in SoCal. Here are the results and some notes about the games:

Menlo College Men's Tournament

In the First Round, Cal Lutheran (1-0) led off it's season opener by defeating visiting UC Santa Cruz (0-1), in a close game, 60-57. Cal Lutheran trailed at the half 28-29, but outscored the Sea Slugs 32-28 in the second half. Dulaney of Cal Lutheran led the scoring with 16 points and 8 rebounds. Johnson had 11 points and 8 boards. The leading scoring for UCSC was Todd wwith 21 and 9 boards.

In the Championship Round, Cal Lutheran lost to host Menlo College 65-70. Dulaney again led Cal Lutheran's scoring with 16, while Whitfield was the only other CLU player in double figures with 13; Menlo (3-1) had a balanced scoring attack led by Helgeson with 16, Ramsey with 11 and Thorn with 13.

Grand Canyon Tournament

In a third round game, Cal State San Bernardino defeated Alterson college 83-66. Mayes of CSSB led all scoreers with 21, followed by Williams and Johnson with 18 each. Cal State led at the half 39-31, and hung on for the easy win.

Chapman College Men's Tournament

In Friday's games, Chapman, Steve Lavin's alma mater defeated Southwestern 58-49. Lavin wasn't there, but at the Clipper's-Bulls matchup at the Sports arena instead, but Chapman still managed to pull off the win, easily defeating Southwestern. In a sort of law firm inside joke, Chapman was led by Mitchell with 14, and Strange who had 10 (where's Booth?). The high scorer for Chapman was Gonzales with 14. Chapman led by 6 at the half, 29-23, and never trailed.

In the other game on Friday at Chapman, Occidental defeated Pacific Christian 104-96. Oxy's Steben had an amazing 44 points. Pacific Christian led at the half 51-47, and the game went into overtime, tied at 87-87 in regulation.

Colorado Mines Men's Tournament

Cal Poly Pomona won the Championship game, defeating host Colorado Mines, by a score of 79-74.

South Dakota Tech defeated Milwaukee Schoool of Engineering 77-58 in the consolation game.

Trinity Texas Men's Tournament

In the Trinity Texas Tournament, Whittier College (featuring George Gurrola 6'-10" Fr. Van Nuys High, Van Nuys) defeated Marian College by a score of 73-68 to take third place in the tournament. Gurrola only scored two points in the win; Haywood led the team with 21, and Chanaiwa had 14.

The Championship was won by St. Thomas, Texas which defeated host Trinity Texas by a score of 73-58.

Southwest Texas Tournament

In first round action, UC San Diego defeated Concordia, Texas 112 to 95, while Sul Ross lost to Southwester Texas 75-94.
