Danny
Herrera of VC Will
Play at Oxnard--(November 21, 1997)
We've been reporting on the Greek tragedy that was Ventura College's basketball program this past year. From the top of the heap, State Champions two years ago, to no program at all, leaving the entire team (at least those six who were still eligible to play) stranded without a home (literally, after they were evicted by their landlord). Seems there's a small silver lining in the clouds for at least one of the VC players.
Thursday, the LA Times reported that at least the basketball season still goes on for Danny Herrera (6'-7" Fr. F, Santa Paula High, Santa Paula, CA). Except it now goes on at Oxnard College. Danny will continue attending classes during the day at Ventura, and will then drive the short 10 miles to basketball practice at Oxnard, where he's been added to the roster.
In view of the suspension of the entire program by VC's president, the state Commission on Athletics granted approval for Ventura players to transfer to Oxnard or Moorpark--schools in the Ventura County Community College District. The transfer exemption will avoid the dreaded "redshirt" requirement for transfers.
The Times
also reported that Jimmy Sanders, a freshman point guard, also
considered Oxnard, but that Herrera is the only player to
actually take advantage of the rule permitting transfers.
"All the other guys are sitting out," Herrera told the
Times. "I guess they all
thought it wasn't worth it. I decided to play because I love the
game too
much. That's the only reason."
Herrera played for Oxnard last Friday, coming off the bench in Oxnard's 101-80 loss in their season opening game to College of the Sequoias. Herrera was in for only a few minutes, and didn't score.
In his senior year at Santa Paula High, Herrera averaged 13.5 ppg, and 11.5 rebounds.
