SoCal Recruiting News & Review

David Hamilton Signs With Auburn--(November 15, 1997)

David Hamilton (6'-8" Sr. F/C) from Compton High, Compton, CA, has reportedly signed a letter of intent to attend Auburn.

This comes as a bit of a surprise, because most of the recruiting services were figuring that he'd go either to Fresno or to Miami-Florida. But a few of the Auburn websites had him "in the running" there for a while, although it was a well kept secret. According to Michael Miller who talked with Rod Palmer, David's coach at Compton, it came as a surprise to Palmer too.

Hamilton will be joined at Auburn next year by Chris Porter, a 6'-8" 230 lb, All-American PF, and Mack McGandy, a 6'-7" forward, both of whom signed letters this week. We don't know anything about these two guys, but it looks like Auburn will have a pretty big frontline next year.

Also in the news about Auburn is a report that Jeremy Beasley, (6'-9" F/C) has decided to leave the school, reportedly because he wasn't getting enough playing time. A press release issued by the school stated: "Jeremy has decided to leave the basketball team to explore other options," head coach Cliff Ellis said. "He wants to go where he can receive more playing time. Jeremy has always been a class individual in representing the basketball team as well as the University, and I wish him well in the future."

For those of you who don't know a whole lot about Auburn, here's a look at the roster.

Dereck Caldwell (6'-4" G Jr) Brantley,AL.

Franklin Williams (6'-6" F Sr.) Headland, AL, Headland
Julius "Doc" Robinson (6'-2" G So.) Selma, AL., Selma
Randy Hughes (6'-9" F/C Fr.) Roswell, Ga., Roswell
Adrian Person (6'-7" F Jr.)
Brandon Sisler (6'-5" G Fr.) Rome, Ga., Rome
Dudley Smith (6'-4" G So.) Auburn, Al., Enterprise St. (JC)
John Gomillion (6'-3" G Fr.) Brandon, Fl., Bloomingdale

That's four freshmen, four sophomores, four juniors and only one senior.

Auburn is coached by Head Coach, Cliff Ellis and Assistant Coaches Eugene Harris, Mike LaPlante, and Shannon Weaver.

So far this season, Auburn is 3-1 overall having beaten two exhibition teams (Next Level Sports and Marathon Oil by scores of 79 - 63, and 78 - 65, respectively); they lost to Temple at the NABC Classic at Albaquerque, New Mexico 68 - 42;
they defeated Central Florida at Orlando, 70 - 63. Apparently Beasely wasn't going to get any playing time because this guy N'diaye is scoring double doubles every game. I recall reading something this last summer about Mamadou N'diaye the big 7'-0" center from Senegal, and how he spent a year in the U.S. at prep school. Something about how there's this lawyer in Washington D.C. who recruits African players for certain prep schools who happened to find him, who also has this relationship either with a particular University or with the prep school. I'm going to look for the article, and if, as and when (lawyer talk) I find the information, I'll let everyone know.

Congratulations David. Y'all deserve it.
