SoCal High School & Prep News Report

A Few Harvard-Westlake Notes
and Season Schedule--(November 16, 1997)

Even though we're pretty high on the Chaminade team this year, let's remember that Harvard-Westlake is still the defending State Champions, Southern Section CIF Champions, and Mission League Champions. Since we just finished writing about the Mission Leagues' Chaminade Prep, we don't want our friends (and we've got a few) at Harvard-Westlake to feel slighted. We still love you guys. And we'll be talking to Hilliard this week, to update our report on the team. But for now, thanks to Lee Garson, and to Fred Lakey too, here's the team's schedule for this season. While this team has lost the Collins twins to Stanford, Ryan Smiley to Penn, Rico Cabrera to prep school, they've still got more than a few guys who can play, including Victor Munoz, and a few other returning guys and a whole bunch of very talented freshmen players, including (shameless plugs here) Greg Lakey (who'll see some time at the point), Chad Garson (6'-3" SG/SF) a very nice three point shooter from the baseline, and freshman Eric Geffner (6'-5") who's got great hands and very quick footwork. If Victor Munoz hasn't been nominated yet for the McDonald's All-American Game, somebody's a few bricks short of a full load. Somebody NOMINATE HIM NOW! This kid's a major prospect and deserves all the props he can get. We've already done a small preliminary report on the team, but we'll have some new stuff later in the week; and we'll also (hopefully) have some other really interesting news and a few surprises from some of H-W's more famous alumns shortly.

But in the meantime, here's the schedule. Remember, there's full details of the tourneys on our Tournaments Page. H-W will play in one of the most prestigious tournaments in the country this year, perhaps the premiere high school event: The Reebok Las Vegas Holiday Classic. They will also play locally in the LaSalle-Temple City Tournament, and the Thousand Oaks Tournament. In the La Salle tourney, they could very well see Montclair which would be a terrific matchup.
