SoCal Recruiting Report & News

Dante Smith and Gadzuric to
Wait Til Spring--(November 13, 1997)

Poor Ben Braun and his bad news Bears.

The first day of signing came and went, and the mailbox was empty. Ray Young will go to UCLA; Tony Bland will go to Syracuse (although we have not received any official confirmation that they've actually signed on the dotted line yet).

The Bears have signed no one, and the only two players remaining on their short list for the fall signing period probably will wait until spring to make a decision. According to a report in the Daily Cal today, Dante Smith (6'-2" Sr. PG, Anacostia High School, Washington D.C.) will wait until spring, and so will Dan Gadzuric (6'-11" Sr. C/PF, Dummer Academy, Byfield, Mass.)

According to the Daily Cal, "Gadzuric appears to have lost some interest in Cal". The schools currently on his "short list" are UCLA, Connecticut, Kansas and George Washington.

"Dan wants to go to a place where he has a chance to contribute, a place that will take care
of him as a person," Gadzuric's high school coach Steven Metz told the Daily Cal. "A good rapport with the coach is important. Those types of things are hard to judge, but we'll do our best."

It was unclear whether Metz was saying that he doesn't believe Gadzuric would have a good rapport with Braun, or just a better one with some of the other coaches. In any event, consider Cal a longshot for this one.
