Valley College Wins Final--(November 23, 1997)
As we reported on Friday, Fullerton Community College's men's basketball tournament semi-finals got underway on Friday night at Fullerton. In the first game, Valley College (3-1) defeated Saddleback College (4-1) by a score of 82-79. Germain Chase (who has signed a letter of intent with Montana State for next season) hit a 3-pointer with nine seconds left to win the game. Valley led comfortably at the half, 42-29, but then Saddleback made a nice run, scoring 50 points in the second half. Valley's Chase finished with 18 points, while Leon Bristort finished with a team high 19 points. Other scorers for Valley were Maracaccini 15, Elize with 10, Noel with 5, Hadley with 4, Eemisse with 3, and Huff and Dotson with 3 apiece. Saddleback was led by Freeman with 21, Jackson with 20, Simmons with 14, Etemadi with 14, Frazier with 8, and Strelecki with 2.
In Friday night's other contest Fullerton defeated Palomar CC to advance to the finals last night with Valley.
In the championship game, played last night at Fullerton at 7:30 p.m., Valley won by a score of 89-73, and Leon Bristort was named the tournament MVP. Bristort had a tournament high 34 points and 8 rebounds. Maracaccini scored 20 points , Chase had 11, Eermisse had 6, Nelson and Elize had 5 a piece, and Noel and Thomas both scored 3 points. Noel had a game high 8 assists. Valley improved its record to 4-1 on the season.
Host Fullerton played well, and Ashe led the team with 22 points followed by Sanders with 17; Smith had 10 points, Burries and Halverson both had 7, Sten scored 6 points and Charles had 4.
