Chatsworth Beats Canoga Park 70-50--(November 26, 1997)

Alright, so we didn't get to see this game yesterday. Gotta work sometime. But the LA Times had a pretty good report of it, so we'll repeat some of the information that Eric Sondheimer gathered at the game.

According to Sondheimer, Canoga Park is a team in need of a leader now that Carloes Harper has graduated and moved to CSUN to play for Bobby Braswell. We could have told him that.

And he says that Chatsworth is not going to finish last in the 4A West Valley League this year. We thought that too, not a team which has been together for three years, and returns a bunch of really tall, athletic guys.

And especially not if senior guard Montae McFarland has anything to do with the result.

Yesterday, McFarland hit for 27 points, including 15 in the second quarter. This game was, like all high school games now, played with a 35 second clock, a new rule instituted for high school play this year. But according to Eric Sondheimer, "They could have used a 15 second clock the way both teams were throwing up shots".

Chatworth is a really big team this year, featuring six players who are taller than 6'-5". Hmmm. Westchester, you listening? How about Crenshaw. Well maybe Chatsworth isn't that good, but they're going to be better than last place like last year.

And Chatsworth is coached by a guy with a pretty cool name: Fluke Fluker.

McFarland missed three layups in the early part of the game, but then took charge in the second quarter, in which Chatworth outscored Canoga 21-4, stretching the lead to 48-21.

Other results from Wednesday

There were only a couple of other high school games in LA. Here are the results:

San Fernando 72, Monroe 70

Devin Montgomery, as expected, brought San Fernando the victory with a shot from four feet out with only three seconds remaining on the clock in the third overtime. Now this is a game we should have seen. But duty calls sometimes. Monroe's Damien Ritter had 19 points and six assists, and connected on three-pointers at the end of each of the first two overtimes to tie it each time. But it was not enough to hold off the San Fernando Tigers, who played with only six players available during the final minutes of regulation. In the losing cause, Victor Hall had 22 points, Ricardo Godoy had 10. San Fernando was led by Mike Page with 19 and Trone Purnell with 17 points and 12 rebounds.

Scores From Other Games:

Venice 82, Sherman Oaks CES 77
South Gate 48, Garfield 44
Mid City 86, Elizabeth St. 43
Middle College 63, Westside Magnet 32
