Cal Poly
SLO Beats Little
Cal Baptist--(November 19, 1997)
Cal Poly SLO beat a small NAIA team, Cal Baptist last night by 82-65 at Cal Poly SLO. It was not a pretty win though, and they almost got beaten.
The Mustangs actually trailed by eight points at halftime. Cal Baptist, a smaller team, which Cal Poly defeated last year by 46 points, out-rebounded and out ran Cal Poly in the first half. The game only came back to Cal Poly in the final five minutes when the Mustangs were able to run off a 12-0 run.
Cal Poly's first game did not turn out as well, and after a similar experience with Five Star Sport, the Mustangs lost by two, 103-101. This time around, the first half was also dismal, but they started back up sooner in the second half, shooting 52.8 % from the field on 19 of 36 shots, and outrebounded Cal Baptist bya margin of 33-14. Cal Poly's scoring leaders were Watende Favors who scored 20 points; Bjorklund had 22 points, a game high, and 9 rebounds. Wozniak had 18 points, but was not especially effective overall from the three-point line, making only 5 of of 14 three's attempted. However, he did make four free-throws in a row.
In the second half, Cal Poly ran a halfcourt offense, controlling the tempo and slowing the pace, because it just was not able to stay with the fast-break style that was being run by Cal Baptist in the first half. Cal Baptist was also out-rebounding the in the first half, and actually outrebounded the entire game, 26-16, with 12 offensive rebounds. Neither team shot particularly well either during the first half, with Cal Baptist being only 37.5% effective, and Cal Poly at 44.4%.
Cal Poly coach Schneider told the media that Cal Baptist is the hardest hustling team that his squad has ever faced. Cal Poly is now 1-1, and will host another NAIA team this Friday, November 21, the team from Simon Fraser University.
