Hey UCLA:
Watch Out,
NBC Thunder Is Coming--(November 19, 1997)
We believe they are for real. Last night they came into the Boise State game with a 7-4 record.
Make it 8-4. They're real.
Playing three games in the last four days, they are 3-0; during that time NBC's beaten Jim Harrick's University of Rhode Island team by 24 points, 83-59. They beat Idaho State, 72-64. And last night they beat Boise State 60-66.
About the only thing that can be said as a negative about NBC is that their margin of victory is getting smaller, and their scoring is being dominated by one player, Tyrone McDaniel. But the W is just as big.
For what it's worth, here's a recap. NBC took a quick 7-0 lead; Freshman Trevor Tillman then came into the game and the Broncos went on an 18-4 scoring spree, but NBC came back, and led 37-25 at the half. In the second period, the Broncos trailed by as many as 20 points, but came back to within 3 points with about 2:00 left in the game. With 4.4 seconds remaining on the clock, one of the Broncos managed to tip in a rebound, bringing the score to 66-69 in favor of the Thunder. On the inbounds throw in, the Broncos fouled Tyrone McDaniel, who went to the line, and missed the first shot of a 1-1 free-throw attempt. The Broncos got the rebound, and Justin Lyons (6'-7" Sr. F) launched a half-court shot which hit the rim, missing by inches.
Final score Thunder 69, Broncos 66.
One SoCal Hoopster who was expected to start, Kejaun Woods (6'-6" Fr. F Crossroads) did not play. The Bronco's leading scorer though was another SoCal man, Gerry Washington (6'-1" Jr. G Brentwood School), who led both teams in scoring with 20 points. Washington also shot 4-7 on three pointers. The leading scorer for the Thunder was Tyrone McDaniel, who had 19 points and 6 steals, and 4 assists. Nico Harrison had an off night, and only scored 3 pts, playing 26 minutes.
For those of you who are "stat" freaks, here are some from the game tonight:

Looks like McDaniel is the key to the Thunder; at least he was the key against the Broncos. Should be an interesting matchup tonight for the Bruins.
See you at Pauley.
And if you can't make it, the game is on 1150 AM, Sports Radio LA.
