Berokoff to San Diego State??--(November 20, 1997)
Several recruiting websites are reporting that Jeffrey Berokoff (6'-3" Sr. SG) from La Habra's Sonora High has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend San Diego State next year. While we don't doubt for a minute the veracity of these sites, there has been no independent corroboration of his signing yet.
We're pretty certain that it's just a mere formality, and that any minute now, San Diego State will confirm that it received Jeffrey's letter. When we contacted SD St., the coaches were still in practice, and they couldn't be reached for confirmation. But, word is that they were on the phone late last night (before the midnight deadline) working with Jeffrey on getting his letter faxed and mailed to the school. We're therefore pretty confident that Jeffrey Berokoff is going to be an Aztec next year.
Berokoff is one of the better players in Orange County, with a very nice perimeter game, and a good three point shot. Congratulations Jeffrey.
San Diego State has announced though that it has received official letters from five other high-school basketball recruits:
David
Abramowitz (5'-11" Sr. PG University of San Diego High, CA)
Myron Epps (6'-6" Sr. SF/PF, Tulare Union High, Tulare, CA)
Vincent Okotie (6'-7" Sr. SF/PF Grossmont High, SD, CA)
Joe Mann (6'-10" Sr. C, Poway High, Poway, CA)
Jackson Jones (6'-7" Sr. PF Jefferson High, Cedar Rapids,
Iowa)
All of these guys, with the exception of Jones, are SoCal products. Abramowitz is perhaps the most well-known, and he plays on the same team as Luke Walton, who will play for Arizona next year. Abramowitz is an excellent point guard, with a great three-point shot, and great passing ability.
Okotie, at 6'-7" and 225 lbs. is an inside scoring threat who also has nice outside range. The final local recruit is Joe Mann from Poway High. Mann, at 6'-10 and 260 pounds, is thought to be not done growing yet, and he could reach 7' over the next few years. Myron Epps has the potential to either play the small forward position or the shooting guard, and he's a very athletic player. Jackson Jones, the only non-California recruit, averaged 17.7 ppg and 8.5 rebounds last season, and was named First Team, All-State in Iowa.
