ARC v. Southern California All Stars--(November 24, 1997)
This is really more of a teaser than an article or a report on the games this past Sunday at North Hollywood High. The ARC 10's and 11's won, and the 13's and 14's were literally crushed by Pat Barrett's Southern California All Stars, and I have no idea what happened to the 12's. For the ARC 14's, many of whom were playing together for the first time as a unit, it was a real learning experience, and a rude awakening about what they'll need to accomplish to be more competitive against teams like the Southern California All Stars. ARC was led by Matt Lewellyn (playing the 3-4 spot), David Gale (normally a point who played the 2), and Craig Weinstein. Between Lewellyn and Gale, they had half the total points scored by ARC in the game, and were the only scorers in the first quarter for ARC, which was simply unable to cope with the swarming, scrambling press of SCAS. Craig Weinstein played well at the point, as did Romel Camacho. For the ARC 13's, the usually unflappable Harrison Shane was hampered by 4 questionable foul calls in the first half alone.
After the last game, we chatted briefly with Pat Barrett, and we'll be featuring a full report on the SCAS team shortly, along with complete rosters, hopefully presenting a bit more balanced view than the recent 60 Minutes piece. We'll also be doing a series of articles in the next few days on one of the premier programs for instructional, developmental basketball, and traveling teams, American Roundball Corporation, ARC and it's founder Rich Goldberg, who has recently joined forces with Issy Washington of Slam-N-Jam.
