Locals Do Well Even in a
Loss for Stanford--(November 14, 1997)
Don't feel too bad for UCLA. While the Bruins were playing some pretty weak competition last night at Pauley (except for the play of Dion Cross--how fitting that he's from Stanford--and Shawn Meyers, neither of whom played like they were from Lithuania), a little further north up the coast, Stanford and local products Jason and Jarron Collins of Studio City's Harvard-Westlake (why does everyone say it's in North Hollywood--it's not, it's in Studio City), suffered a defeat at the hands of Athletes in Action, 73-69.
This was the AIA "Red" team, which so far has played Northwestern (winning 91-69), Valparaiso (winning 88-73), Notre Dame (to whom they lost by 1 point, 78-77 at the buzzer), St John's (whom they beat 78-64), Indiana (who got hammered by AIA 93-77), Maryland (which defeated AIA by 5 points 85-70, after AIA was down by 26 points), Michigan State (which beat AIA 86-73), Michigan (which lost its second straight game to AIA 95-93), Bradley (which lost to AIA 87-78), and Evansville, Malone, and Beaver Community College, all of whom were defeated by AIA. The "Red Team" features former Golden State Warrior David Wood, who played in the NBA in the 94-95 and 95-96 seasons. It's a pretty formidable squad. We're pretty certain that Paul Collins, the twins' dad would rather have been at Maples watching his boys than at Pauley where he was, watching some pretty ugly play from a Lithuanian squad which actually gave UCLA a tough time. Ah, what might have been. . .Baron and the twins. . . But back to reality.
In Thursday's game at Stanford, the NBA veteran Wood gave the freshman a lesson, scoring 16 points for AIA, and adding six rebounds. Andrew Adderly added 14 points and Greg Colbert had 12 for AIA. AIA also had veteran center William Cunningham, a 7 footer from Temple.
Stanford was led by Mark Madsen who had 13 points; Jason Collins and Peter Sauer both combined for 12 each, and Madsen and Collins each had five rebounds apiece. Stanford was slowed a bit by Arthur Lee's (North Hollywood '96) head injury, which turned out to be nothing serious. Backup freshman point McDonald did not see more than about 6 or 7 minutes during the game, but played well. Jarron Collins also played very well, scoring and rebounding effectively, and it looks like the three freshman will probably see some major minutes this year.
Stanford's average height is pretty scary: They have eight guys over 6'-7", and of those, one is 6'-8", three are 6'-9", one is 6'-10, and Tim Young, a junior, is 7'-1. Match that up with UCLA, and you can see just how badly the suspensions of McCoy will hurt the Bruins. . . but that's another story.
Even though Stanford was defeated, it looks like our local SoCal boys did well. So Jason and Jarron, when you get tired of the secret service, Chelsea, and "farm" life, c'mon home. And you too Arthur: Coach Steve Miller was at the UCLA game and sends his regards as well.
