Southwest LA County: Friday's Games From
The Press-Telegram--(January 18, 1998)

Because we're trying to bring as many games as possible to your attention, so that as many players from SoCal can get the recognition they deserve, we present to you this compilation of reports, most of which appeared in the Long Beach Press-Telegram. We bring them to you in this format because principally, in a matter of hours, these reports will be forever lost to all but those with print editions of Saturday's Long Beach Press-Telegram, because the online site for the P-T no longer archives such articles. So in order to preserve the information and present it to you in as timely a fashion as we can, here it is:

Moore League:

Jordan 61, Wilson 41: Darren Peterson poured in 23 points and Travon Bryant added 12 points and 12 rebounds as the Panthers (12-7, 2-1) cruised past the visiting Bruins (5-13, 1-2). Jordan opened the second half with a 26-11 run and was never threatened. Cory Harris led Wilson with 16 points.

Compton 89, Millikan 48: David Hamilton had 16 rebounds and 15 points and Deandre Moore scored 14 points to go along with seven assists and five steals as the Tarbabes (16-3, 3-0) rolled over the host
Rams (1-17, 0-3). Tito Maddox added 11 points for Compton.

Surburban League:

Artesia 107, Norwalk 43: Junior forward Jason Kapono recorded 17 points, 13 assists, 12 rebounds and four steals for the host Pioneers, who won their 36th consecutive league game. Freshmen forwards Apolinar Fernandez (23 points, 10 rebounds) and Jack Martinez (22 points, eight rebounds) were unstoppable in the paint for Artesia (16-1, 2-0). Senior center Aaron Whitall led the Lancers (6-10, 0-2) with 12 points.

Bellflower 78, La Mirada 47: Isaac Brooks muscled inside for 22 points and 16 rebounds and the Buccaneers closed the game with a 28-11 run to put away the visiting Matadores (7-11, 1-1). Cedric Lusk (16 points, eight rebounds, five blocks) also found the middle appetizing for Bellflower (16-2, 2-0). Vaughn Jarrett paced La Mirada with 16 points.

Mayfair 64, Glenn 56: Josh Childress and Lewie Helton combined for 29 points as the host Monsoons (10-8, 1-1) rallied to defeat the Eagles (0-2 in league).

Camino Real League:

St. Monica 59, St. Anthony 49 (OT): Joe Luyben (15 points) sent the game into overtime with a free throw, but the Saints (15-5, 1-2) could not overtake the Mariners.

Olympic League

Orange Lutheran 55, Valley Christian 54: The Crusaders (7-9, 0-3) fell behind early to the host Lancers and could never catch up, despite getting 14 points apiece from Nathaniel Feddes and Erick Streelman.

Ocean League:

Centennial 63, Culver City 49: Arturo Jones had 16 points to lead the visiting Apaches (12-5, 3-2).
