Van Nuys Tournament: Yes, Another
Tourney Begins Today--(January 5, 1998)

Thought it was time to get on with the regular season? Thought all the high school tournaments in SoCal were done and over with? Think again.

Seems that not everyone goes back to school right after the first of the year, and most LA Unified School District High Schools have another week off. So Kevin Kannemura, the coach at Van Nuys decided to schedule the Wolves own tournament this week, and they invited some other 3A schools along.

The Van Nuys Tournament begins today at 3:30 pm at Van Nuys High School. This is an all- LAUSD City Section Tournament, featuring only Division 3A schools, and one Magnet Conference school (SOCES). The teams are Reseda, Kennedy, El Camino Real, Venice, Hollywood, University, Van Nuys and Sherman Oaks CES.

Here's today's schedule:

Reseda v. Kennedy, 3:30 pm
ECR v. Venice, 5:00 pm
Hollywood v. University, 6:30 pm
Van Nuys v. SOCES, 8:00 pm

Van Nuys High is located centrally in, of all places, Van Nuys, on the block bounded by Kester on the west, Kittridge on the North, Gilmore on the south and Cedros (I think) on the east. The gym entrance (look for the Red Star) is actually located right at the tee intersection of Willis and Gilmore. Just go through the gate, and it's at the back, to the north. There is ample parking. Here's a map for those who need better directions. Take the Ventura Fwy (101) east or west and get off at Van Nuys. Head north to Victory and turn left. Turn right on Willis (or Cedros) and go to Gilmore and you're there. Alternatively, take either the Hollywood Fwy to Victory and head west, or the San Diego Fwy to Victory and head east. Again, thanks to the nice folks at MapQuest (tm).

This should be an interesting tournament, and will feature at least a few fine players, including Venice's Glen McGowan.

Don't miss it.
