Big West:
More New Links; And
UOP Really Does Exist--(January 14, 1998)
Our good friend and sometime medical consultant (although he'll deny the latter appellation, purely for liability reasons), Dr. David Stein tells us that he has a "friend" who's been looking around SoCalHoops trying to find a link to the University of the Pacific website. In fact, in four out of the last five days, Dr. Stein has asked us each time we've run into him, "So, do you have UOP up on the site yet?" and each time we've not known what to say, believing that we had listed all of the Big West teams that had websites available on our Division I Men's College Page. We were too busy to check, and really didn't want to think about the work it would take to edit the page if the link wasn't there. So we faked it, replying each time, "Of course we have UOP. Why anyone can see that. Tell your friend to look harder."
Of course, we were wrong, and there are more than a few schools in several conferences not yet listed. And while we did have most of the Big West schools linked, it turns out that we were still missing three: Neveda, North Texas, and (you guessed it) University of the Pacific.
So I spent about a minute on Infoseek and voila! There they were, and each of them has a very nice site. For those interested in visiting UOP now (and we know that at least someone is) it's here. Click here. Really. Go ahead. Do it. You'll get there. Just wait and watch.
Just why this fellow was so interested in UOP is still a mystery to us, since UOP is currently having a season that's nothing to write home about. They are 8-8 overall and 0-2 in league play. Not a bad team, but not great either. The guy must be an alum. Why else woud he care? But that's what all Cal grads say about UOP, isn't it? [ We also say stuff like "What's the single most notable feature of Stockton?" It's the most inland of any deep water sea port in California. Really. Seagoing ships actually dock in the Central Valley of California. Bet you didn't know that. And the second most notable feature? It's not somewhere else. . . which is where you'd like to be if you were in Stockton now . . . but we digress. Again, just kidding.]
So now SoCalHoops has also got a link to the Nevada Wolfpack (Reno) which plays in the Eastern Division of the Big West (also a very nice site), and, more importantly, for those Anteater fans here in SoCal, the UC Irivine Men's (and Women's) basketball sites. The UCI site is especially nice, because it is directly linked to Real Audio's web broadcasts for all the UCI men's and women's games.
So, if you're a Big West fan, now you've got links and access to all the teams, including the University of North Texas-- the "Mean Green Machine", which coincidentally is playing UOP tomorrow, January 15, 1998 in Stockton. Is this great timing, or what. The game will also be broadcast from AudioNet's site, so if you're a UOP or Mean Green fan, don't miss it. We'll probably be doing something else ourselves, but at least we now know someone out there might just tune in.
