Other Scores From Tuesday In
And Around SoCal--(January 28, 1998)

As always, there were a whole bunch of games played yesterday, Tuesday, January 27, 1998. We've talked to some who were at the games, and scoured the papers for other scores and highlights. Here's what we found:

ACADEMY LEAGUE

Downey Calvary Chapel 70, St. Margaret's 50

The Grizzlies (10-9, 5-0) got 24 points and 12 rebounds from junior forward Keegan McInnis in their win over the host Tartans (6-11, 2-3).

METRO LEAGUE

Boys Republic 66, Upland Christian 19

Eric Jackson scored 14 points and Mike Jacobs added 11 as Boys Republic (8-7, 8-0) defeated Upland Christian, 66-19 in the Metro League. Nick Kramer's nine points led Upland Christian (0-14, 0-8).

MT. BALDY LEAGUE

Etiwanda 84, Chaffey 66

Rancho Cucamonga 79, Ontario High 66

A first-quarter blackout struck the Ontario High School gymnasium for 15 minutes Tuesday night and by the end of the host's game with Rancho Cucamonga, the Jaguars' Mt. Baldy League championship hopes were equally dim. Sparked by a 17-2 run in the third quarter and strong inside games by Chris Spencer and Donnie Furnald, Rancho Cucamonga defeated Ontario, 79-66. Ranked seventh in the Inland Valley, the Cougars (16-5 overall, 4-1 in league) stayed in contention with Etiwanda in February's league-finale ahead. Ninth-ranked Ontario (14-5, 3-2) now needs help to earn a share of the league title. Two Ontario starters who showed up late for practice Monday were held out of the opening lineup. Rancho Cucamonga held a 33-32 halftime lead after Furnald, who finished with 21 points and 17 rebounds, scored with four seconds remaining. Ontario scored the first two baskets of the second half, but then watched the Cougars score 17 of the next 19 points, six by Spencer. Spencer wound up with 13 points and 16 rebounds and Rancho Cucamonga outrebounded the Jaguars, 48-35.

NON-LEAGUE

Yucaipa Wilson Creek 79, Calvary Baptist 63

Justin Allen scored 25 points as Yucaipa Wilson Creek (9-4) built a 45-27 halftime lead en route to a 79-63 nonleague victory over Calvary Baptist. The Cougars (6-7) were led by Emad Mahli (24 points, 10 rebounds).

OCEAN LEAGUE

Centennial 55, El Segundo 48

Senior Brian Johnson (17 points, 10 rebounds) and junior Marquis Poole (14 points, seven assists) lifted their play in the second half for the Apaches (15-5, 6-2), who rallied from a 22-18 halftime deficit to defeat the host Eagles (8-12, 2-6).

OLYMPIC LEAGUE

Valley Christian 60, Brethren Christian 37

Junior center Erick Streelman worked inside for 24 points and 12 rebounds, including 14 points in the third quarter, as the host Crusaders (9-9, 2-3) downed the rival Warriors (1-4 in league). Sophomore Lee Mamaradlo had 11 points for Brethren Christian.

Whittier Christian 87, Ontario Christian 67

Jon Stoa scored 23 points to lead the Heralds (12-9, 3-2) past the Knights (8-11, 1-4). Josh Streeter added 18 points for Whittier and teammate Steven Zieman had nine blocks.

Calvary Chapel 72, Orange Lutheran 38

Calvary Chapel came out hot and never cooled as the Eagles rolled over Orange Lutheran, 72-38, in an Olympic League boys basketball game Tuesday at Calvary Chapel. The victory moves Calvary Chapel (15-6, 5-0) into sole possession of first place, while the Lancers (9-8, 4-1) drop into second. The Eagles held Orange Lutheran to a pair of baskets and two free throws in the first quarter while building a 15-6 lead. The second quarter was simply more of the same as Calvary Chapel's Brett Young scored 11 of his game-high 21 points to push the lead to 40-15 at halftime. Young also had nine rebounds in the game. Calvary Chapel's offense was able to snap the ball around with crisp passes and few turnovers. Orange Lutheran staggered from the start, unable to fully recover until the second half — by which time the Lancers already trailed by 25. In the first 44 seconds, Orange Lutheran had already comitted three fouls and sent starter Dustin Smith to the bench with a pair. About 45 seconds into the third quarter, down 29 points, Orange Lutheran's offense put together a 12-0 run to trim the score to 47-29. Matt Erickson led the Lancers during the run with six of his 14 points. But before the Lancers could seriously think about running back into the game, Calvary Chapel closed out the third quarter with a three-pointer and a layup by Joe Ortiz and opened the fourth with a basket from Tyler Ohanian to open the lead back to 25 points.

SAN GABRIEL VALLEY LEAGUE

Warren 57, Paramount 51

The visiting Bears, who led 17-9 after the first quarter, received 19 points from junior forward Robert Borg to hold off the late-charging Pirates (0-5 in league). Borg scored 10 points in the second half, including six in the fourth quarter, for Warren (16-5, 2-3). Senior forward Justin Marcel connected on three 3-pointers en route to a team-high 15 points for Paramount.

Dominguez 90, Downey 48

Senior off guard Mike Carson came off to bench to sink four 3-pointers and lead four players in double figures with 14 points as the Dons (14-3, 5-0) ran past the visiting Vikings (2-3 in league). Tayshaun Prince (three steals) and Keith Kincade (seven rebounds) added 14 points apiece and center Tyson Chandler had 11 points, eight rebounds and three blocks for Dominguez, which shot 52 percent from the field. Junior Jamar Eubanks scored 17 points and senior Zack Grant tossed in 12 points for Downey.

VALLE VISTA LEAGUE

Ganesha 85, West Coving South Hills 73

Warren added six assists and three steals for the Giants, who outscored the Huskies, 45-36, in the second half.

San Dimas 54, Bonita 45

Matt Grundy had 10 points and 12 rebounds for the Saints, who outscored the Bearcats 24-15 in the fourth quarter.
