Orange County Report: Sunset
League Games--(January 29, 1998)

There were three different Sunset League games played yesterday. Here are the scores and highlights from each:

Fountain Valley 66, Esperanza 58

Ryan Moreau, a 6-0 junior guard, scored 30 points to lead visiting Fountain Valley (11-9, 3-2), which led by 17 at the half. The Aztecs (8-13, 1-4) were led by Doug Brown with 17 points.

Los Alamitos 64, Huntington Beach 53

The Oilers took a 14-2 lead to start the game, but Los Alamitos (11-8, 3-2) went on a 28-4 run to take the lead for good, sparked by Ryan Ellis and Jeff Grgas, who combined for 19 points in the run. Ellis led the Griffins with 17 points, nine rebounds and four steals. Grgas finished with 16 points and seven rebounds. Nick Sinclair led Huntington Beach (7-13, 2-3) with 20 points and John Davidson had 12 points and 13 rebounds.

Marina 54, Edison 44

The cold-shooting Edison Chargers, who made only five field goals in the first three quarters and finished 12 for 41 (29%) for the game, never gave themselves much of a chance at home. Edison made only one basket in the first quarter and none in the third, and trailed by as much as 18 points before a fourth-quarter flurry made the final score respectable.

Marina (10-11, 3-2), which moved into a first-place tie with Edison in the Sunset League boys' basketball race, wasn't hot from the field either, making 13 of 37 (35%). But the Vikings more than made up the difference at the free-throw line, making 26 of 38. Three Edison players were assessed technicals for either a rough foul or saying the wrong thing to the officials.

Marina's Dustin Kaatz, who made two three-pointers and was 13 of 16 from the free-throw line, led all scorers with 25 points. Garrett Golden and Jeff Harrell scored 10 each for Edison. Wednesday's victory for Marina helped ease their pain in an already tough season. Of their 11 losses, one has come in overtime, two have been in double overtime, and three have been by a combined total of seven points.
