Slam Dunk
to the Beach: Dominguez'
Victory over Paintsville--(January 3, 1998)
In all the rush to report on the local tournaments, we forgot to report on the Slam Dunk to the Beach victory which Dominguez had in it's game on December 30, 1997 against Paintsville, Kentucky at the tournament.
First, it's important to note that Tayshaun Prince (6'-8" Sr. G/F) was named to the All-Tournament Team. And there's a reason for that: In the game against Paintsville, Tayshaun had 22 points, 21 rebounds, and two blocked shots. The game was for seventh place, and the Dominguez Dons won, beating Paintsville 73-70.]
Walt Small (6'-5" Sr. F) added 18 points and eight rebounds, while Tyson Chandler (7'-0" Fr. C) scored 15 points and another two blocked shots for Dominguez.
For Paintsville, J.R. Van Hoose (6'-9" Sr. C) who is being recruited by the University of Kentucky and Indiana University, pumped in a game-high 29 points.
With the win, Dominguez improved to 8-3 on the year, while Paintsville fell to 5-4.
Willie Hurst (5'-10" Sr. PG) added 7 points, Keith Brooks (6'-5" So. F) hit for 2, Keilon Fortune (5'-10" Fr. PG) scored 3, Michael Carson (6'-5" Sr. G) added 4 points, and James Boulton (6'-5" Sr. F) hit for 2 points.
Paintsville controlled the game in the first half, edging Dominguez 15-13 at the end of the quarter. In the second quarter, Dominguez managed to close the gap, and went into the locker room at the half with the score tied 28-28. In the third quarter it was all Dominguez, and at the end of three they led 53-45. Even though Paintsville managed to close the gap by outscoring Dominguez 25-20 in the fourth, it was not enough, as Dominguez won by three.
Congratulations to the Dominguez Dons on the win, and welcome home.
In the third place game, Ohio St. Edward's beat Alameda St. Joseph's 57-47. We're still getting details of that one, and as soon as we have them we'll put up the details.
In the Championship Game, New Jersey St. Patrick's beat Baltimore Dunbar (the team which had defeated Dominguez in the first round) by a score of 56-47.
