San Gabriel Valley League:
Thursday's Games--(January 30, 1998)

There were three games played in the San Gabriel Valley league, and in at least one, it was almost major upset time, as Lynwood game Dominguez a run for their money, which just played awfully in the first half of what turned out to be a close game. Here are the details:

Paramount 58, Downey 57

Senior guard Marcel Justin hit the game-winning basket from the foul line with three seconds left to cap an improbable 23-point comeback as the Pirates (7-15, 1-5) stunned the visiting Vikings (2-4 league). Downey held a 38-15 lead with five minutes remaining in the third quarter when the Paramount defense suddenly tightened up and didn't allow the Vikings a field goal the rest of the game. The Vikings also hurt themselves by shooting just 13 of 25 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter. Samuel Johnson led Paramount with 21 points. Zack Grant paced Downey with 20.

Dominguez 94, Lynwood 81

Senior forward Tayshaun Prince scored 17 of his 25 points in the first half and the Dons (15-3, 6-0) had to overcome a season-high 27 turnovers in their win over the feisty Knights (13-9, 2-4). Dominguez turned the ball over 18 times in the first half and held a slim 46-45 lead at the break. However, Keith Kincade (16 points) and Walter Small (12 points) combined for 21 points in the latter stages of the game to help the Dons hold on. Mike Carson sank five 3-pointer and added a season-high 17 points off the bench. Everett Williams (21 points), Gary Lenoir (20), Keyawn Floyd (14) and Perry Owens (12) all scored in double figures for Lynwood, which got as close as 70-65 in the fourth quarter.

Gahr 52, Warren 43

John Fenderson hit 7 of 8 free throws in the fourth quarter and Ramaan Shotwell had 14 points to as the Gladiators (15-7, 5-1) pulled away from the Bears (2-4 league). Robert Borg had 16 points to lead Warren.
