Top 10
Regional SFV and
Ventura County: How They Did--(January 17, 1998)
The LA Times is constantly expanding their coverage of prep hoops, and it's getting better and better as the season advances. Paige Leach is a top-notch reporter, and you should have seen her compiling stats last night at the Chaminade v. Harvard-Westlake game. That women sure knows how to score a game. . . and write about it too. She had one of the most complicated scoring sheets we've seen in some time. Much more detailed than Vincent Bonsignore's from the Daily News, who scores a game very much like we do, with a yellow legal pad, taking the line scores. Although we doubt the accuracy of the rebounding statistics in the game, we have to say that her stats were only one rebound off the "official" Chaminade stats for rebounding.
Anyway, we'll cover the H-W v. Chaminade game, and a couple of others in a few other articles today. But first, again about the Times' expanded coverage of prep hoops. As you know, the Times (along with most other regional and local papers) features it's "Top 10". Well, now in order to keep better track of this "Top 10", the Times is also publishing it's "How the Top 10 Fared" column. Here's the first installment, at least according to the Times, for the week completed January 16, 1997:
No. 1. Simi Valley (Southern Section CIF Maramonte League)--(16-3)-- Lost to Newbury Park, 73-71; Defeated Agoura, 81-65
No 2. Chaminade (Southern Section CIF Mission League)--(14-1)--Defeated Crespi, 82-70; Defeated Harvard-Westlake, 90-75
No. 3. San Fernando (LA City Section CIF North Valley League)--(15-2)--Defeated Cleveland, 79-70; Defeated Taft, 73-61
No. 4. Harvard-Westlake (Southern Section CIF Mission League--Defending State Champions Division III, Southern Section Champions Division III-A)-- (14-4)--Defeated Alemany, 67-54; Lost to Chaminade, 90-75
No. 5. Newbury Park (Southern Section CIF Marmonte League)--(15-4)--Defeated Simi Valley, 73-71; Defeated Camarillo, 71-55
No. 6. Cleveland (LA City Section CIF West Valley League)--(11-6)--Lost to San Fernando, 79-70; Defeated El Camino Real, 76-67
No. 7. La Canada (Southern Section CIF Rio Hondo League)--(15-4)--Defeated Blair, 62-52; Defeated San Marino, 57-37
No. 8. Montclair Prep (Southern Section CIF Independent)--(16-3)--Defeated Rolling Hills Prep, 57-47; Def. South Bay Lutheran 77-61
No. 9. Hoover (Southern Section CIF Pacific League)--(12-6)-- Defeated Arcadia, 63-56; Lost to Muir 66-47
No. 10. Channel Islands (Southern Section CIF Marmonte League)--(13-3)--Defeated Thousand Oaks, 77-68; Defeated Westlake, 56-54
You'll notice this is not the "Top 10" for the entire LA/Orange County area that the Times published this last week, which of course includes teams such as Westchester, Crenshaw, Compton, Santa Margarita and others. The above list relates solely to the Northern end of LA County, and most the San Fernando Valley, West San Gabriel Valley, and Ventura County areas.
So, to the extent "Top 10" lists really mean anything (and we don't think they mean much) this is an easier way to keep track of them. We thought you should know.
