San Diego Hoop News: Top 10 for the
Week Of January 8--(January 10, 1998)

We were a little bit late in getting this up (read our previous article from 1/10/98 and you'll know why), but here's the latest from Pat McKinney at the University of San Diego High School site.

San Diego Hoop News

Top 10 for Week of January 8 and Western Openers

The San Diego Union Tribune's Top Ten for this week:

1. USDHS (7-3)

2. Horizon (7-2)

3. Rancho Buena Vista (12-1)

4. Rancho Bernardo (12-4)

5. St. Augustine (8-4)

6. El Camino (7-6)

7. Bishop's (9-4)

8. Poway (9-5)

9. Monte Vista (11-3)

10. Grossmont (7-3)

The only thing that is clear in the preseason is that no one really dominated. There are a number of strong teams in San Diego, but league play will really help to separate the best squads.

Western League Play opened Wednesday as University City downed La Jolla 59-48. Four players scored in double figures for UC. Neither team is expected to contend, but UC is improved this year. Another up and coming team is Lincoln, who whacked Mission Bay 93-40. Lincoln went up 23-7 in the first and ended it early. Uni gets Lincoln tomorrow night and it will be interesting to see if the game is played at a frenetic pace or one that is more deliberate.

One of the surprises in the early season occurred in the Eastern League where Serra took out traditional power Morse 64-50. City basketball may be down this year, as Morse only shot 27% for the game and got only six from senior Patrick Robinson. Nate Cooper led Serra with 22, as they improved to 9-4.
