Results: Santa Barbara,
Ventura Counties--(January 24, 1998)
Here are some odds and ends, mostly scores and highlights, and at least one more detailed report of the San Marcos High v Hueneme game. All of these games were played Friday night, January 23, 1998, so we're trying to stay as timely and fresh as possible. Again these may not feature all the detail that you'd might like to see, and certainly doesn't feature the same player analysis we'd like to do, it does feature some good stuff on a couple of the teams such as San Marcos.
CHANNEL LEAGUE
San Marcos 60, Hueneme 49
With the score tied 39-39 after three periods, Hueneme went ice cold, and the Royals controlled the boards, and shot well to put the game "in the refrigerator" 60-49. Even though he had a sore ankle, Oden and Jordan McOwen were the two go-to guys for San Marcos, as the seniors combined for 15 points in the final period. Oden had 21 in the game, even though he missed the second quarter while getting his ankle taped, and McOwen had 14.
This was the sixth league victory for San Marcos in six games, and the Royals, who are 7-1 in league, 16-3 overall, will match up against undefeated league-leading Dos Pueblos this coming Wednesday. Hueneme was just not focusing on the game they were in, and shot only a mediocre game from the floor. With the loss, Hueneme's Vikings drop to 2-6 in Channel League play, and 6-11 overall.
For San Marcos, the win was also brought about by Brook Billings' (6'-5" Sr. F) 13 rebounds in the game. McOwen (6'-4" Sr. F) also had seven rebounds. San Marcos was also sparked by McOwens' great and timely shooting. Midway through the final quarter, with the Royals leading 44-43, McOwen hit 15-foot shots from both sides of the key to open up a five-point lead. After a Hueneme basket by Albert Garcia, Oden then went to work. He hit a 3-point shot, then fed Art Gutierrez for an open jumper, and finallay hit on another jumper to push the score to 55-47 lead with 1:27 remaining.
But Hueneme by this time in the game, was just out of last minute theatrics. They weren't in the third, as Johnie Williams' layed down a dunk which was just thunderous. Norman and Robert Collins, who sank a pair of 3-pointers, each scored eight points to lead the Vikings. San Marcos point guard Randy Moharram had four assists.
Oxnard 57, Ventura 43
Jeff Fouchey scored 23 points for the Yellowjackets (12-6, 6-2) at Ventura. Damian Tafoya and Jacob Rogers each scored 10 points for Oxnard. Jeff Staniland had 14 points for Ventura (5-14, 2-6).

Bobik led a group of six players with eight or more points. "They really tried to stop Daniel (Bobik)," said Newbury Park coach Steve Johnson, "and we had a lot of other people step up." Newbury Park pulled away from a 27-27 tie at halftime. Johnson said Staine's defensive play was a key.
"We switched him to cover (Kevin) Howard in the second half, and he did a great job," said Johnson. "He's so athletic, you're never going to shut him down, but we were able to stop some of the easy baskets." Howard led Westlake with 15 points, 10 of them in the first half. Daniel Bobik also had 10 points for Newbury Park. Jesse Jacques had 13 for Westlake, playing without standout guard Joey Cuppari. He was on a football recruiting trip to Colorado State.
