Briefs: San Gabriel-Pomona
Valley Scores--(January 22, 1998)
Here's some news from the San Gabriel and Pomona Valley areas of SoCal from yesterday. Some of these teams have been featured here on SoCalHoops, and some will be new to you. But all of them played yesterday, and we thought you should know the scores and details. Here they are, along with the stats leaders for the region as well. The stats are courtesy of the Inland Valley Bulletin, which is improving it's local coverage daily. Please visit their site, as it's expanding and getting better than ever. Oh, and if you live out in their circulation area, by all means, go buy a paper.
BASELINE LEAGUE
Upland 72, Damien 59:
Jeff Cammon hit five 3-pointers while scoring all 19 of his points in the first three quarters as Upland, which is 13-7 on the season and 3-1 in league, won over visiting Damien, which is now 2-2 in league. Matt Bloye and Brad Bussam scored 13 points each and Matt Santos collected 12 assists for the Highlanders. Marcus Williams led the Spartans with 12 points and Robert Tobin added 10 points in the loss.
Glendora 66, Chino 36:
Casey Jacobsen scored 19 points and Dominic Degrassi added 10 points, 11 rebounds and eight blocks as Glendora, which is 18-1 overall and undefeated at 4-0 in league play, routed Chino. Chino has a losing record this season, 4-14 overall and only 1-3 in League play. Dan Steele scored nine points to lead Chino.
VALLE VISTA LEAGUE:
San Dimas 63, Ganesha 61:
San Dimas trailed by nine points with six minutes remaining before rallying for the win over host Ganesha. Matt Grundy led the way with 21 points off the bench for the Saints, who improved to 15-4 overall and 5-0 in league. Grundy had eight points in the fourth quarter, including hitting 4 for 4 on free throws. D.J. Hackett had 15 points and six assists, Joe Bolander had 13 points and 10 rebounds and Josh Smith chipped in with 11 points and 14 rebounds. Ganesha, which dropped to 9-10 overall and 3-2 in league, led by four points at the end of the first quarter, and then came back again to lead by two as the fourth quarter began, was led by Mau Uiagalelei's 18 points. Eric Manuel scored 15 and William Warren added 12 for the Giants.
Bonita 59, Covina 43:
Bonita shot 60 percent from the field and David Juiliano personally scored 19 points. He was the only player for either team in double figures. Covina is now 0-5 in league. Jason Barber added seven points and seven assists for Bonita, which improved to 9-11 overall and 3-3 in league.
SIERRA LEAGUE:
Ayala 55, West Covina 35
Shane Unrein scored 16 points and Jay Espinoza added nine points, six rebounds and four assists for Ayala, which improved to 15-4 overall and 3-0 in league play in the victory at West Covina. Covina is now 7-10 overall, and 0-3 in league. Trailing 9-8 after the first quarter, Ayala outscored Covina 18-3 in the second period to take a 26-12 halftime lead, and easily hung on for the win.
