Inflight BBall: Perris High
School Notes & Review--(January 22, 1998)

More Inland Empire News. Yes!!!. We really do appreciate Infligtht BBall's providing us with some additional insights into the teams playing in and around the San Bernardino, Ontario, Perris, and Riverside County areas, all portions of SoCal which do not receive nearly the media attention they deserve. And even though we're grateful for the chance to report on this area, and break the "code of silence" which surrounds a geographic area larger than most small states, please keep in mind that the opinions expressed in this article are those solely of the author, Inflight BBall. If you've got a complaint, or a compliment, let Inflight know at lidonflght@lasercom.net . Anyway, here's Inflight's Perris High report:

Perris High School:
A College Recruiter's Dream Team

By Inflight Basketball

In spring and summer of 1997 three of Perris' players played off and on for Inflight. Isaac Williamson and Anthony Lloyd came to Las Vegas Grand Finale, Ryan Ruiz played in most of the tournaments we participated in. I was very impressed with their great attitudes and work ethic, all of the players that I know on their team absolutely live basketball and it shows. I waited to write about Perris High until their game at Temecula Valley High. Perris humiliated Temecula 91-54 and showed that there is no chance any team in the Sunbelt league will compete with them for first place. Perris has also beat Moreno Valley and Rancho Verde easily for a 3-0 record in league and a 12-6 record overall. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Perris High school is the best team in Riverside county this season. Their record may not reflect it, but they have played a grueling schedule.

Perris played in the Oceanview Tournament where they beat Mater Dei, L A Fremont, and Etiwanda. They also competed in the Best of the West Tournament in which they lost to Compton in overtime, L A Westchested by 7 and Compton Dominguez by a point. They also beat Canyon Springs twice, blew out Riverside North and lost a close game to Arlington, when Jimmy Miggins had a monster game with 34 points. Along with the tough league they are in there are practically no gimmes on their schedule. Coach Landers has worked them very hard with a schedule that is perfect to get them ready for the playoffs.

With as much talent as they have they play very unselfishly, always making the extra pass and playing tough team defense.

Their most visible star the past two seasons has been 6'-5" Damon Jackson. Damon is a dunker with an excellent 3 point shot. Perris is at its' best when Damon is playing unselfishly, playing defense and rebounding. The few times Perris has problems is when Damon starts shooting too much. Jackson is averaging approximately 20 points and 14 rebounds, so far this season he is playing team ball. The other front court players are 6'-4" Isaac Williamson and center 6'-6" Tim Provost. Isaac is a very skilled player that would be playing a guard especially with his 3 point shot. For Perris he is in the post where he is averaging approximately 10 points and 12 rebounds. Provost is a Football player who adds toughness and rebounding.

I am most impressed with the Perris backcourt, 6'-3" Anthony Lloyd at point and 6'-0" 2guard Ryan Ruiz. Lloyd moved to the point this year where he will play in College. He is considering San Jose State, Loyola Marymount, and Drake. I really enjoyed watching Lloyd distributed the ball, 8 assists per game, and with his blazing quickness he went by his defender with ease. Lloyd is also the best defensive point guard I've seen in Riverside this year. Ruiz moved to 2-guard this year but is a true point guard at the next level. Ryan is a winner and a great clutch player. Ruiz is averaging 17 points and 5 steals while hitting three 3-pointers per game. Ryan Ruiz and 6th man 5'-10" Martel Battle are both being recruited for football as well as basketball.

As long as Perris keeps their team concept they will win league and go deep in CIF. Their top 6 players are seniors so the time is now for this powerhouse.
