Pacific
League: Goffredo Proves
Inspirational For CV In Win--(January 25, 1998)
Here are the results from Friday's games in the Pacific League, including the CV v. Hoover game, which was preceded by a ceremony honoring John Goffredo, CV's former coach for 19 years. Again, this is short, but sweet.
Crescenta Valley 83, Hoover 75
Alex Tima scored eight of his 25 points in a 28-point fourth quarter for the Falcons at Crescenta Valley. Mark Hull scored 35 points for Hoover.
But before the game got under way, former longtime Crescenta High boys' basketball coach John Goffredo was honored before the start of Friday night's game between Hoover and CV. And the Falcons couldn't have rewarded Goffredo with a better tribute.
Goffredo, who stepped down as the Crescenta Valley High boys' basketball coach in February after 19 seasons, compiled a 313-171 record, succeeding Ed Goorjian in 1978 as just the second varsity coach since the inaugural 1963 season. He led the Falcons to 16 winning seasons and 16 playoff appearances, including 12 straight postseason berths. After spending 25 years in the basketball program and winning 469 games, Goffredo continues to teach at Crescenta Valley.
So after the honors ceremony, and shaking off not only a height disadvantage, an earlier blowout loss to the Tornadoes and 35 points from Hoover standout Mark Hull, the Falcons posted an 83-75 upset in a Pacific League showdown before a packed crowd at CV.
CV improved to 3-2 in the Pacific
League, tying it for second place with Hoover and Pasadena. Alex
Tima led CV with a career-best 25 points in a see-saw battle as
nine Falcons scored, and five were in double figures. This was a
big win, and a confidence booster for CV, something they really
needed. CV improved to 13-8 with the win. They almost didn't pull
it off though, and trailed, 40-39, at halftime. But in the third,
they staged a comeback rally, and at the end of the third, they
led, 55-54. The Falcons didn't take the lead for good until
Robert Toroussian's 3-pointer put CV up, 67-65, with 3:40 left.
After two Christ Shakhmalian free throws and a layup by William
Mulvoy, CV led, 71-65, with three minutes to go. Hoover
didn't come within four points after that.
The Falcons, with no player taller than 6'-2, crashed the boards ferociously against Hoover, which dropped to 13-7 overall, which at times featured a front line with three players 6-5 or taller. CV matched Hoover with 37 rebounds as Mulvoy led CV with nine rebounds and Tima grabbed eight.
The Tornadoes had beaten CV, 76-58, in the title game of the Hoover-Burbank Tournament in December, but that was when the Tornadoes had 6'-4" forward Artin Del Keoukian and guard Martik Gukasyan. Without those two starters Friday, Hoover coach Kirt Kohlmeier's bench didn't have the same depth. Smiley, meanwhile, kept rotating in a steady mix of players, knowing his players couldn't afford to get fatigued against the Tornadoes.
Hull and frontcourt mate Zareh Avedian gave CV fits with their size and inside play. Hull had 19 points by halftime and scored 12 of Hoover's 21 points in the fourth quarter. He led Hoover with 10 rebounds. The 6'-6" forward was practically unstoppable with his assortment of pull-up jumpers, runners and leaners. He also threw down a pair of dunks, the second a reverse jam on a breakaway that tied the game at 64 with 4:20 remaining. He had 35, and it felt like more. Avedian added 18 points and eight rebounds, and was a defensive force in blocking five shots four in the first half. Wafeeq Hampton played well off the bench for CV with 13 points and seven assists. Kean Mallory scored 11 points, and Shakhmalian and Toroussian had 10 each.
In other Pacific League games:
Muir 69, Pasadena 62
John Wilburn scored 17 points for Pasadena in the loss to Muir. Wilburn also had two three-pointers. For Muir, Jeff Washington and John Parker each had 15 points. Muir is now 16-5 overall and 5-0 in league play. Pasadena is 12-10 overall, and dropped to 3-2 in league.
Glendale 61, Arcadia 52
Krikor Karamanoukian had 17 points and Ronald Baghomian also scored 17 for Glendale in the win against Arcadia, which dropped to 0-5 in league play and 5-16 overall. Glendale is not doing much better though, and is only 1-4 in league play, and 10-11 overall.
