League Games From Friday:
Compton, Gahr, And Poly Win--(January 25, 1998)
Comton 76, Lakewood 37
This one, like Dominguez' game against poor Paramount, was no laugher unless you were a Compton fan. David Hamilton (6'-9" Sr. C) who is bound for Auburn, just hammered the Lakewood Lancers for 21 points, 14 rebounds, including 8 offensive boards, and four blocked shots. Hamilton collected 15 of his points in the first half and already had 8 rebounds at the half. The score at the half was Compton 37, Lakewood 13. Hamilton's shots came mostly from the field, and he make 10 of 13 shots before leaving the game with more than 6 minutes to play after just making a huge slam. But Compton coach Rod Palmer, perhaps sensing that the game was over, wisely pulled Hamilton out, not risking injury to one of his star players. We wish we could say the same about Dominguez--but they showed absolutely no mercy to Paramount, beating them by 64 points.
Compton scored every which way they could. They trapped, ran and then trapped some more. They forced 26 turnovers in the game, and just flat-out out-rebounded Lakewood 41-25, and it would have been a lot worse had Palmer not pulled Hamilton with most of the fourth quarter left to play.
For Compton DeAndre Moore scored 15 points, Tito Maddoz had 12, and Donny Legans, who hasn't played all that much this year in tournament action, scored 10. Reggie Howard did not play having sustained a sprained ankle last week before the game.
The game actually looked as though Lakewood might give the Tarbabes a fight. Midway through the first quarter, Lakewood still led 9-6, after having led at one point by a score of 5-0, on shots by Bobby Thompson and a 3 from Lionel Benjamin, who was Lakewood's leading scorer with 14 points. But then Compton decided they had toyed long enough with the Lancers, and they went to work, going on a 15-0 run, and for nearly seven minutes, Lakewood didn't score.
There is probably not a team that can even touch Compton in league play, and in their last four games, they've won by an average margin of more than 30 points. They will play Wilson at Compton on Wednesday. With the loss, Lakewood fell to 7-13, and 1-3 in league play.
Jordan 81, Millikan 73
Sophomore center Travon Bryant had a career-high 30 points to go along with 12 rebounds as the Panthers (13-8, 3-1) held off a stiff challenge from the Rams (2-18, 0-4). Craig Calloway had 12 points and Mike Newton and Darren Peterson poured in 11 and 10 points, respectively, for Jordan. Antoine Griffin led Millikan with 17 points.
Poly 72, Wilson 52
Senior forward Ricky Anderson, bound for Arizona next season, had 18 points and nine rebounds as the Jackrabbits cruised past the host Bruins (5-14, 1-3). Shelton Diggs added 17 points for Poly (16-5, 3-1).
