River League Game Results:
News From the High Desert--(January 24, 1998)
The news out of the high desert comes slowly. In fact, the Ridgecrest Burrough's "Burros" game against the Victor Valley Jackrabbits, which was played last Tuesday night, is the only news that we've had out of the Mojave River League, which is actually in the Southern Section of CIF, and thus truly a part of SoCal, and features teams such as Apple Valley, Barstow, Burroughs/Ridgecrest, Hesperia, Sultana, and Victor Valley. The Barstow website, the only one we know to be operational in this area for high schools, hasn't had it's sports section updated in a long time, in fact the only thing they've got there are the fall sports schedules, so unless you want other information about the school, don't go there looking for hoops news.
But we did manage to get some news about the Burroughs and Victor Valley game, which was won by Burroughs 82-54, to place Burroughs at 4-0 in league and atop the standings. Just what the other records are of the remaining teams, we're not certain, but at least Burroughs is on top.
Tuesday night the Burros, who are now 9-9 overall and 2-2 in Mojave River League, made 14 second-half turnovers as opposed to the seven they made in the first 16 minutes. And the Jackrabbits also managed a 48-15 second half effort as the Jackrabbits, who improved to 4-0 in Mojave River League play, beat Burroughs in Victorville 82-54.
Victor Valley played at Barstow , which is also 4-0 in Mojave River League play this past Friday night, and currently we have no idea what the score of that one was. but there were three key MRL matchups, all scheduled to take place on Friday: Burroughs hosting Sultana in Ridgecrest, while Apple Valley, which is winless in league at 0-4, and Hesperia, which shares the same 0-4 Mission River League record, will matchup as well
While the score may not indicate it, Burroughs was in control of the game through halftime before turnovers and a halfcourt trap by Victor Valley derailed the Burros and dropped them back to .500 for the year. "They came out in a fullcourt press and we handled it well," said Burroughs Co-Head Coach Bill Campbell. "We had good patience, passed over the top of it and really used the floor well against it They were not contending with us as far as that press was concerned."
But when Burroughs came out for the third quarter, Victor Valley had shortened the floor, dropping back into a halfcourt trap that slowed the Burro break and brought the tempo back in line with their game plan. Nevertheless, Burroughs weathered a 19-6 third-quarter run to trail just 53-45 with eight minutes to play.
"We were still in the game until about six minutes left," added Campbell. "We were only down by about nine, but then we made almost all of our turnovers in the period in one spurt and they converted." The Jackrabbits converted to the tune of a 29-9 run to close out the game and pull away for an 18-point victory. Jason Thomas led a trio of Jackrabbit scorers in double figures with 24, with Stefan Horton adding 19 and Rmond Dillior 17. David Rollingson was solid again for Burroughs in the paint, scoring a team-high 20 points and grabbing nine rebounds. Trey Montoya was unaffected by the cut to his upper lip he suffered in last week's win over Apple Valley and scored 13.
For Burroughs, the scoring was led by Rollingson with 20, Montoya 13, Curtis 5, Jones 6, O'Neil 6, Moffitt 2, and Tankersly 2. For Victor Valley the scoring was led by Dillior with 17, Zamudio 6, Thomas 24, McTier 2, Momon 4, Reymond 4, Knox 6, and Horton 19
