Mission League: Thursday Game Reports--(January 30, 1998)

There were three games played in the Mission League on Thursday. Here are the highlights and scores from each.

Chaminade 67, Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks) 55

Justin Beach scored eight of his 19 points in the fourth quarter, helping Chaminade High to a 67-55 victory over Notre Dame in a Mission League boys' basketball game Thursday night at Notre Dame. Scott Long had 24 points and 11 rebounds for the Eagles (18-1, 7-0 in league play), the top-ranked team in The Times' regional poll. Notre Dame (8-11, 1-5) trailed, 49-46, after three quarters but Chaminade pulled away with strong free-throw shooting, making 30 of 39 in the game. Dante Ward scored 20 points for Notre Dame.

Crespi 71, Alemany 54

Tim McDonough scored 14 points and Pat Casella added 12 for the Celts (10-10, 3-4) in a Mission League victory at Crespi. Alex Lowe scored 18 points for Alemany (6-13, 0-7).

Loyola 65, St. Francis 57

Richard Fields scored 24 points for St. Francis in a Mission League home game. Derek La Velle added 14 points for the Golden Knights (9-11, 3-4) in the losing cause. St. Francis came out in a zone defense which completely flustered the Loyola Cubs, who had practiced all week with a man-to-man offense. This was the first time that St. Francis has used a zone in 12 years, and for a while it worked. St. Francis opened quickly, taking a 14-10 first quarter lead, but Loyola rallied back and led by a point at the half, 23-22. But the game was determined in the second half, as Loyola just broke the gaps in the zone wide open, scoring 42 points in the second half as sophomore forward Ryan Mollins led the way with 20 points, followed by senior guard Gordon Hallman with 11 points. Daryl Meigs, a senior forward added another 10. Loyola, 8-4 last season, are now 15-6 overall, having defeated Harvard-Westlake and they are in second place behind Chaminade, the LA Times Regional No. 1 in the Valley. St. Francis struggled with its shooting on Thursday. The Golden Knights went 4 for 18 from 3 point range, and Fields, normally the hot shooter only shot 2 for 12 from three territory. Loyola used a 22-14 third quarter run to keep the score ahead, and also managed to hit almost all their free-throws down the stretch, going 10 for 24 from the line overall.
